Was driving North today out of Anchorage and took this video of going past Mary Carey's "Mountain House".

She was freshly Divorced from a bad marriage and 52 years old when she moved to Alaska in the 1950's. She homesteaded this land, which at the time was wilderness, no roads, and she lived about 30 Air miles from the Town of Talketna about 38 miles away by trail. She got the patent on the homestead and build the restaurant/lodge in the late 1960's when the Parks Highway was first put through the area to Fairbanks. She died a few years ago in her nineties. I've known her for as long as I can remember and always stopped to have coffee and visit with her. Now her Daughter snd grandkids run the place in the summer months then migrate back to Texas for the winters.

Anyway, the view she has of Mt, McKinley is/was one of the most photographed base points of the mountain!

Yeah they do! I still stop there a lot, was in a hurry to get north today so my timing was off. Will stop next week, hopefully before they close for the winter!

Stopped in there several times over the years! I think she had a place near Talkeetna also! More of a gift shop type business! Thanks for the video! Looks like a nice day up North!

About mile 130ish of the Parks Hwy. Just after you cross the Chilitna River headed North.

She was quite the gal. Right up until just about the end, she would sit in the gift shop welcoming people as they came in!

She use to have quite a shining for Don Sheldon who was a famous Alaskan Bush Pilot that flew out of Talkeetna up to Denali. She had his photos up on the wall, some with her helping him fuel planes in the 1960's. In his book "Wager with the wind", I don't recall him mentioning her though, so it may have been a bit one sided.

Yeah...I remember when she got a call from James Michener when he was writing "Alaska". She thought it was a prank call and told him off. I remember her blueberry cream pie.
