Thanks for the backup Danny. I really wish people would take the time to visit and explore...and by this I mean outside of the cruiseshi(t)p arena, downtown, carpet bagger thing. SE AK is really beautiful and has alot to offer, but you have to fall in love with something beyond the cruiseshi(t)p view and be good with paying more for living in it. One of the appealing things to me IS the lack of big box stores and malls (although there is now Walmart and Home Depot)....You just can't expect to live in AK the same way as you do outside. Okay...I'm done.

Home Depot was sorely needed, but is having staffing issues (hint, hint...can anyone out there do contract installation work? Big opportunity here....).
Walmart is not really setting the town on fire, but will probably hang in there out of pure damn meanness. Cobolt is right about $$$$$-blowing opportunities. Not a whole lot here to waste your bucks on, but the internet makes it easy to obtain anything anyone living in the lower-48 can get. I just ordered an new pair of boots last last friday, came in yesterday and with free shipping. And as far as cars/trucks go, in the spring it can be a buyers market. Many vehicles sitting around with "For Sale" signs on them, folks hauling tail after their first winter and can't secure (or afford) ferry space to take it with them. I try to tell all newcomers who move here (those with no relatives, etc), don't step foot in this town with less than 5 grand available. Getting established here is the biggest hurdle. |

Yep....agreed agreed. What I learned in my time there is that you really can do with much less than you think you can. So much of the materialism is simply a distraction. I mean, it's nice to have nice things, but are you picking up what I'm laying down? I like that there aren't a whole lot of shops and things to distract you....as you said, you can get stuff online. It puts you in a different mindset when you realize that you can live a simplified life. Does it suck that you look at basic household items and know you can buy them outside for less? Sure. But to me it makes you more selective and therefore less material. You tend to pick and choose with more care. I love you guys!!!

I agree as well. I haven't been into Home Depot yet, no plans to ever even look at Walmart. Most of us are just too loyal to freddies, foodland, rainbow foods, superbear, costco, what have you.
If you are a professional, there seems to be a good market for that. A browse through the Empire's sunday job listings would seem to prove it... |

Yea I like Fredy's too..I really like the remodel job they did. I think loyal Freddy fans will stay away from Wally Hell.
I AM professional.....well I try to act that way....Might have a look see at the Empire. Where ARE you now??? Still on the water? How much longer until touchdown Juneau? |

hell, it's really easy to live in juneau (or alaska as a whole) cheaper than you can live in the lower-48.
you develop a lesser dependency for those things that you used to consider "necessities", which was really just "in the way consumer BS". spend less, save more. works for me.......but not others...... |

As far as being a "professional", I have a "professional job", but it's fun not having to look like it. They appreciate me for what I can do, not for how I dress. |

You should read the AK chat thread Cobolt, I wrote this whole long ode to home about how happy I was to be back in Juneau. I was waiting for you to read it and get annoyed because I made you homesick! ![]() It's beautiful right now, by the way, absolutely gorgeous. It hasn't rained since I got here (miracle upon miracles!) and the snow on the mountains... aah... Forecast has been for some snow but it hasn't happened yet. We'll see. ![]() |

Yea Xa'at...torture me why don't you? See...THAT is why I didn't read your ode to Juneau....(not really...I"ve been busy at work). Oh go to the Silverbow for me and get some sort of yummy warm bagel and coffee...!!!! Yes...Freddy's is MUCH better. They do beat most prices. I thought Safeway was pretty much a rip off and only went there when I had to.
Danny...See that's what I love about JNU. YOu can have a professional job but just do the jeans or carharts thing. Who needs to dress up? I Loved that I would see people in Xtra Tuffs and jeans walking out of church. You know, people outside watch Oprah and shows with all these fashion tips: don't wear this...that is out...blah blah. I mean, who can keep up with it all? Maybe I 'm lazy that way, but that's another reason I want up there....because what you have and what you wear matters little to not and what kind of person you are (character) means more: will you help your neighbor...are you a person of your word? I mean, there are losers everywhere....but peeps up there aren't so concerned with all the toys and stuff...and if they are....well then the winters and lifestyle weeds them out soon enough and they're back on the next plane or ferry outside. Welcome home Xa'at!!! We'll have to go on a hike when I get up there....In the meantime, enjoy!! |
