Sity, not to get too specific, but I am a Distributed Controls Systems (DCS) Technician for a power generating business.

As for transformers humming.... Can't authoritatively answer the question because all of my limited knowledge of electricity revolves around small and micro voltage stuff.

But I think it is because of the induction into the secondary from the primary through the oil, and the field activity.

At least that is the story I am making up to answer your question. Thought it sounded good anyway..

Nope, it's just a hide a way. Would love to build a bigger place to live there, but won't happen under my current lifestyle and work. But it is nice to park the plane next to it, so the bears don't play with it like they do by the Lake.
Great hide a way indeed... what a pieceful place. Solar is such a great idea. Bet there's great views from the outhouse

Red.... too funny LOL

What kind of battery life do you have during the longer nights? While my job entails the generation of electricity on a large scale, I know next to nothing about small scale generation and storage.
Well the Batteries last for a long time in my configuration, I use wood for heat, so most of the time in winter I use the new low power lights so they batteries may last for weeks with no charge, never really found out. Used two batteries with the inverter to run a chop saw and skillsaw to cut all the wood when building the cabin and never charged them till I was done! Beats having to listen to the generator running all the time!

The sun comes up over the Alaska Range on the shorter days of the year and sets to the West of Mt. McKinley, so I get about four to five hours of direct sunlight to keep the batteries charged. If they were to lose the charge, they would freeze and crack open at temps of freezing and colder! The temps drop to -60 at times, and -40 is normal.

Never thought of how the freezing temps would affect the batteries. Something I take for granted around here, obviously you can't. Did you sled those batteries up, or did you fly them in?

Obviously I know ZERO about flying, so if that is a stupid question.... forgive me.

That is exactly the answer I was looking for; so I could shake my head (no) and smile big and say.. nope; they just don't know the words!!

Red Beat me to it !!! (chuckle).

I went with (PV) amorphous silicon photovoltaic solar panels PowerBond PVL-144 watt. They roll up and have some nasty sticky adhesive on the back like double sided tap. The nice thing about the is when the moon is out they will still charge a little bit.

Expansion is key, fused, volt, amp meters, Solar Charge Controller, toss in a wind turbine to the system.

Playing with and old treadmill motor Turning it into a wind turbine / windmill. Very cheap to do when wind is around.
Just need to be careful as it can kill you.

If you are looking for some bright cheap lights, check out the G4 24 SMD LED 12v you can get them from .9 - 1.9 watts. .99-$4.00 I have even ran the off 9v.
