During your first couple years it will not matter which university or college you attend. You will need to complete the basic material in English, math and other degree requirements before getting into your core programming courses.

I sorta agree with that Glitch. However, I would want to be at the College that is the "better school" for my major from the beginning. While you have to take core classes the first couple of years, some young adults starting today have been able to get credit for them via AP, CLEPT or ACT - depending on where you went to high-school and what program(s) are available. Two of my co-workers kids graduated high school just a couple of classes shy of an Associate degree.

Also, I was able to take programming courses during my first two years.

So, which school is better?

If you're a senior in Anchorage, you should have multiple opportunities to explore UAA and the other options you have. The high school I teach at has already toured UAA twice and we bussed students to the College/Career fair that was held a month ago.

Look for these sorts of opportunities.

If you are into science in general, UAF is the way to go. But computer science alone should be about the same in both AAA and UAF.

What about UAF for economics? I was checking it out for their masters program since it focuses on natural resources.

Hi,

I also want to support the idea of getting your "core" beginning 2 years done at a school that your degree granting school has a pact with, or an agreement with. I am a huge fan of junior or community colleges because it usually offers smaller classrooms, more teacher involvment, generally, AND MUCH LESS cost!!

Besides, regardless if you finish the associate degree or not the last I checked most degree granting 4 year institutions would recognize most of the core courses as counting towards their own. I had a lot, I think, 51 or was it 63...credit hours completed at a Junior college and transferred them to my degree granting school.

I went to school full time in my 30's and transferred those credits in 99-00. Thing I recommend first is to meet with an adviser at UAF or UAA to see if there is any conflict between the junior college you want to go to or not.

Next, make an appointment with a JR college advisor and tellt hem too.

However, unless none of this will be a student loan, then maybe it doesn't matter so much to you. Still, like I said, I am a huge fan of community colleges.
Jen
