The only other real alternative is for you to stay behind while your fiancee takes the job and then wait it out until something becomes available where you can have your pets. Either that or just decline it and I wouldn't blame you for doing so...though I do hope that you find a way to work it out.

We have rentals and pets aren't an issue, though unfortunately we aren't in Bethel. In fact, I don't think I'd rent to someone who would take their pet to a shelter in order to get a place. That isn't the type of person I'd want on the property.

and YOU are the kind of person i would WANT to pay rent to. people who DONT think like you are missing out on some good tenants. i make a very good income and am a college grad professional. a landlord can be assured that they will always get their rent paid in full on time and the house would be cared for as if it were my own.

That money spent on pets could be better spent on the thousands of starving orphans in Africa. Or on adopting the female human babies that are abandoned in China everyday. Unfortunately we live in a screwed up country with a screwed up value system.....
LOL, so what countries out there have value systems that you like, ole Stiffy ole pal? Perhaps you should go to China, adopt a few "female babies", and order some fried dog while the rest of us celebrate your departure.

And I am FAR from being a vegetarian, but when I see cows, I don't see steaks, I see friggin COWS, man! And cows are beautiful animals, marvelous creations of biology. My biggest problem with eating meat is that a lot of the time, I have no idea where it came from, and chances are that it came from some huge commercial beef factory where they mistreats thousands and thousands of cows until they are big enough to slaughter. More and more people are waking up and realizing the value and benefit of responsible and ethical agricultural practices, and it's not just "bunny hugger crap", it makes the quality of the meat better! Ever heard of Kobe beef? Those cows are treated like queens, pampered all the time, given massages, etc., and it's considered to be some of the very best beef in the world. You can try to say that's a coincidence, but, well... it's not. And I'm lucky to live in an area with a TON of great local farms, so a good majority of the meat I eat is locally sourced. It's one of the things I'll miss the most about WNC when I leave, such great food here.

OP, good luck finding a place in Bethel. I am dying to go there myself because of Warpt's great photos and all the insight I've gained on the beautiful culture of the Yup'ik people. I was so interested I read a book about them, and it increased my appreciation for Yup'ik customs and culture even more. Also, one of these days I'll make it to Bethel and see if Warpt can get me some akutaq/agooduk/however you like to spell it!

I'm both a landlord and a tenant...for the past few years I've stayed in Oregon for the winters due to parental health issues, and I recently leased a place here (in Oregon). I was prepared to pay a huge pet deposit, whatever it took, but the man who owns the property liked the fact that my dog is a rescue and told me not to worry about it

Our tenants in Alaska are all long term types who think of the places as their homes; they do things like grow gardens and have pets. I'd rather have them than short timers who are just there until something better comes along. If people feel like what they are renting is actually their home, they are more likely to treat it as such. But then again we're very rural, with plenty of room outside.

!
Can't give you any more rep just now but consider it done in spirit.

I don't think that Stiffy has ever been a landlord; most likely he had some job sometime cleaning up rentals in Ketch. That would partially explain his bitterness. To be totally fair to him, I imagine that some apartments there were left in pretty bad shape. Cat **** and mold is an extremely unhealthy combination.

Nonetheless his attitude/advice about just "putting the pets up for adoption" is indicative of our throwaway society and one of the reasons that shelters are overflowing with unwanted pets.

But... but... our society is screwed up because not enough people know that you should eat your dogs, not pet them! You didn't know that? Well, you're an idiot, just like me.

788/790 South Point Higgins, Ketchikan, Alaska. Owned it from 1995 until 2002. When we lived back in the 1990's in Anchorage I helped Dean Blair with cleaning the 12 units he owned over on Mayfair in Jewel Lake. We rented one of them so I got a break on rent.

My bitterness on people having indoor pets is cause they all lie about it. Cat urine will not come out of carpets. Dogs urine is a bit easier to get out if caught quick. Then bored dogs start to chew cabinets and claw at the doors.

But since animals are made to live outside it's pure selfishness on the parts of the owners that keep them couped up inside all day. They are doing the animals no favors by doing that. They are doing it for their own selfish reasons. If you don't own a house with a fenced yard then you have NO business having animals. That's just cruel.

Spend that money on helping human children that need it. Instead of dragging a cat or dog home from the pound become a foster parent or adopt and unwanted orphan.

788/790 South Point Higgins. You can do your own research to find out who owned it from 1995 to 2002.

why people have pets, spend money on them....never heard of a pet (unless abused by a human) ever beaten, raped, verbally abused, lie, steal or cheat a human! etc etc....

Wow...I sure missed 'alot' being away; took me a while to play catch-up. All I can say is our dogs are part of our family. We have two big dogs and one small one (who rules) or thinks she does . Our one dog had surgery Saturday and it cost us $1200...I can hear Stiff gasping lol. It was either surgery or put her to sleep---no way would we have put her to sleep when there was an option. We own our home but when we rented we had 2 dogs and left the apartment in excellent condition...there are responsible pet owners out there.

Our 'little' one - a doll amongst dolls...

Oh my Pat...is she the size of a tea cup or what??? cutie!
we also have spent mega bucks on pets over the years...no different than your child...you do what you have to do.....I find most people who have never bonded with animals quite heartless, unhappy, mean spirited people..not my kind of people!
