An All-American distance runner who spent more than two days in freezing winter temperatures without winter gear has had his legs amputated just above the ankles.Marko Cheseto, 28, is one of several Kenyan runners who competed for the University of Alaska Anchorage in cross-country and track. The amputations were reported Monday on the UAA Athletic Department website.

Something about this whole story just doesn't make sense.

Its very sad this had to happen. I don't know all the facts but something just doesn't make any sense based on past reports I've read.

Too many unanswered questions.

Most likely we don't know or will ever know what happened. I sincerely hope that he finds a way through his current troubles and what ever brought him to this point.

I am just sorry it happened. This is one of the first local stories I have really followed, and I was so happy when he was found alive, because I was sure that was not going to happen.

You are both right: we will probably never know all the details, and honestly, we don't really have any right to. I only hope that my personal interpretation - that something drove him to the point of not caring for his own safety - is either untrue or something that will pass in time.

I hope he is surrounded by people who love him.

I don't mean to be harsh or rude in any manner and I am not trying to minimize it in any way either; but as sad as it is; he will have his feet back on in no time; they've made so many amazing advances in prostheics. (sp)?
