My family is considering travelling to Alaska for our vacation.

The group would include 7 and 9 yr old children, two adults, and a 70 yr old grandmother that is not terribly active. We are concerned about potential seasickness with Grandma. She has been told that the inland waterways cruises in Alaska make this easier, but I think I might be more comfortable with a land-based tour package, but I would prefer something all-inclusive. My dream would be Adventures by Disney but that is just not going to work with our budget. We'd like to stay in the vicinity of $10k, not including airfare. We are willing to travel off-season.

I've been googling and am overwhelmed by the options and trying to separate the advertising from the reality. Can anyone recommend a company/tour package that might fit our needs?

Just rent a RV from ABC or Great Alaskan Holidays and go out and explore on your own.

Don't go with pre-packaged tours. Rent a car or RV and put together your own trip of a lifetime.
You'll get some good input on this forum, but I would also highly recommend you spend sometime on the Trip Advisor forums. You'll find a ton of information on traveling in Alaska.

If it was just the four of us, I'd totally do that. I don't think that would work with my mother-in-law in tow, though.

I think that it would be hard on your MIL to go with a scheduled tour, you'd be on their time and not on yours. With your own rental, you are free to go as you please. Just get yourself a copy of the Milepost and chart out your own agenda, not a tour company.

I drove tour bus on these prepackaged tours for two years. Trust me, your mother-in-law will be much happier if you travel on your own.

On the prepackaged tours you are herded around like cattle.

Hmm, well a car rental and hotel-to-hotel would be good, but I do not see MIL being comfortable sleeping in an RV with us and the kids.
