Default Haul Road Experiences

I drive the Haul Road for work quite often, and often too much. I see alot of stupid things, experience alot of cool things as well.

Anyone have any experiences they'd like to share?

I just drove it last week! First time. Awesome scenery. I did have one flat tire 40 miles outside of Deadhorse...and I was on pavement! The fall colors were massive. We saw bear, moose, caribou and musk ox. I highly recommend bringing 2 spare tires...and a spare gas can...although I made Deadhorse from Coldfoot no problemo fuel wise. My first trip was very good. Winter might be another story. I never did see anyone in trouble or any wrecks...but a couple weeks ago there were 3 wrecked vehicles at the Peak shop. They were driving to fast for road conditions.

Winters are easier, and the road gets better. Plus, no tourists or hunters!!!

Cool Great Pictures!

Those are wonderful photos Rance.

When I worked for Alyeska I had to drive the Haul Road several times, but I always ending up going during the winter months. I remember one time I was coming down the south-side of Atigan Pass in an APSC Suburban with an 18-wheeler closing in fast behind me. Since the road was sheer ice, I didn't want the 18-wheeler to have to use his brakes to slow down because of me, so I stepped on the gas. By using my rear-view mirror, I could keep my distance from the truck, and by the time we got to the bottom of the pass I was doing 65mph. It scared the #!$%^ out of me! On the otherhand, when I got to a section of the Haul Road that was overplowed, causing me to sink into 3 feet of soft snow when I moved over to give a north-bound truck some room, that same 18-wheeler that raced me down the pass, stopped to pull me out. It could have been you c.adam!

I've been planning on taking a trip to Deadhorse in August sometime, just to see the tundra in bloom and see first-hand what it is like when it is not covered with snow and ice. There is so much to see in Alaska, and so little time.

I get ride in the Alyeska Helicopter, and it is AWESOME up there. I like that better than driving. I hate driving it. I don't drive 18 wheeler, I'm always on a 4 wheeler zipping around.
