Default Any areas on the mainland that have the feel of Kodiak?

My husband is in the USCG and we will hopefully be getting stationed in Anchorage in July of this year. We had lived in Kodiak for over 2 years and loved it there. We actually would rather be stationed in Kodiak, but instead may be getting Anchorage..so I was wondering are there any nearby towns/areas that have the feel of a Kodiak like town? We love the wilderness and seclusion..Any advice is appreciated!

Well from Anchorage you can go to Whitter, Seward, Kenai and Homer and a few other spots on the highway system you can drive to.

The Anchorage Office is a good place to work out of.

What is your husband's duty going to be there? There are a number of Coast Guard stations in the area. Valdez, Seward, Cordova and Homer. I was stationed in Cordova and Valdez years ago. Cordova was on a ship and Valdez I was there when the Pipeline first started and inspected the tankers and such. Pretty much the same stuff in Anchorage with all the shipping.

Good luck on your trip and tour!

Kodiak is very unique part of Alaska. There are only a few places where you can get away from the water near the road so any place else is going to be without the ever present water which makes Kodiak what It is. The drive across the island from the Airport to the North Shore is about the only place you get an interior feel there. And then there is the golf course with it's sign that tells you bears have the right of way. Once you leave the areas next to the water else where in Alaska it's just not the same as Kodiak. Homer and Seward are the closest I've been to where you get the Kodiak feel but they're more than a hundred miles from Anchorage. The Seward Highway is somewhat similar. But that isn't a place I ever felt good going onto being it's just plain dangerous driving on that stretch of road. Kodiak is all about the proximity to the water.

Well for that rate he can pick from dozens of billets all over the State. There is even a station at Dutch Harbor! But most of the towns in Southeast Alaska are much like Kodiak!

Actually right now there is only an opening at Anchorage..all the other billets have been filled...long story but with all the defense cuts President Obama is making we just found out at the last minute my husband won't have a position down here after July so we are scrambling to see what billets are still open for him..Thanks Obama! :X

Well the CG has always gotten the short end of the stick when it comes to funding already, so I don't see a lot of shining prospects in Alaska for support for its military now that Senator Stevens is gone. They want to close a bunch of the bases to save money to Pay for social programs.

They are not saving the money for social programs, they are being cut too. It's a shame that jobs are being cut rather than the war in Afghanistan. I've only been on Kodiak once, is there a Russian Orthodox church there as well as in Sitka?

The Coast Guard should be the last branch of the service to be put on the chopping block. They actually serve a valuable and useful purpose right here in the U.S.

The other branches don't do much more than create chaos around the world. Start chopping the number of Marine and Army personnel by 75%. Then reduce the Navy and Air Force by 50%.

We have military forces in 60 different countries. That's insanity, and that saves those countries a ton of money -- money they use to build their economy and take care of their own people.

No wonder this country is going downhill faster than me with an avalanche on my a$$.
