I have a plethora of these wee mites all about the back deck...they love to antagonize the feline:

Rance, you weren't alone last eve. I stuck my head out the door and the sky was lit around 3:30am. And it was active...ribbons and pillars, not a lot of motion, but there was some discernible movement. I could even hear them When I pulled my head from the arse and remembered to grab my camera, the activity had dimmed somewhat, but they still danced on until 4:30 or so.

Settings were f/1.4, ISO 800, and 4 second exposure with the nifty-fifty. I tried a longer exposure but it was too bright and a bit washed out.

I shot another similar frame a bit later, again ISO 800, f/2.5, and this time it was a 5 second exposure:

Thanks for posting the settings along with the pictures. It appears that 5-10 second exposure is about the way to go.

Cori you were using a 50mm? I was on an 18 x 70mm. Lowest I can get is F/3.5. The wind has picked up to 30+ mph here this evening so not sure about lights tonight...but I'll be looking. I'd like to have an hour where I can just sit and shoot at different settings...taking notes as I go.

Yes, Rance...that's my nifty-fiftymm - my aurora lens. It is a must piece of glass to have!
May have more to view tonight...Kp's are already in the mid-2 range.
