The only access for most people is to fly in, there is a river access off the River System, but not very practical if you don't have access or know of someone with a boat.

There is/was a good river bank for landing by the town, it may be still there or washed away by now. I was planning to go there this summer if I have the time off and take some photos of the old stern-wheeler I was referring to. Last time I was there, I landed in a Cessna 150 which is by no means a "Bush Plane", but I wasn't very a high enough time pilot to realize that at the time either....

There is a lot of such towns that die after the gold went away, when you are flying across the vast nothing of the State, you will see a place that clearly hasn't see a human foot for some time. Iditarod is just one of the more famous of these places.

But if you make it out there, you will be thrilled!

Here is some photos from the State DNR site...

That would be indescribably awesome to have a whole old town all to yourself to expore. I'm weird, I know, have this thing about snooping around vacant places, even as a kid.

Starlight and Floyd. I drove back up to Steamboat Slough and took more pics about a hour ago.

It's a three deck wooden tug...

Various barges...

Also went back to the old airport, I should have put boots on, I wanted to explore!

Must be building a house downriver somewhere

You are welcome. I really need to wear boots up there, deep snow around the tugs.

I don't recognize any of them, but still neat to see. That old wooden one is what impresses me even more that it is still hanging on...

Thanks for the photos!
