That's Mendenhall Glacier, about ten minutes from downtown Juneau. It's Alaska's "drive up glacier"- you can get really close. In the winter, the lake freezes and you can walk up to the face.
A few years ago we had a heat wave and a bunch of us went swimming out there. The water's fairly cold, but it was really hot outside! Apparently a lot of tourists saw us, because it seems like in every cruise review of Juneau the person mentions the charismatic locals out swimming among the iceburgs! ![]() |

A good friend of mine is a fellow known locally as Joe The Waterman. His home is literally a museum, and I try to go on one of his "guided tours" once or twice a year (sometimes more often), just to see what's new, and of course to take pictures...
I thought folks here might find some of what I photographed last night a bit interesting! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Here's another shot, from a couple days ago. This is in front of Brower's Cafe, and that whale bone arch with the umiaq frames is probably the most photographed location in Barrow. The moon was just less than half, but it is so bright compared to everything else that it looks like it is full. That's the Arctic Ocean in the background of course. ![]() |

It is called a cross-fox. Cross foxes are a color variant of the Red Fox. Other color variants are the silver fox and black fox. A litter of kits (baby foxes) can have all the variants. The cross fox gets its name from the cross on its back. There is a black stripe that goes from the top of the head to the tail and a second stripe that runs across the shoulders forming a cross.

Heck there are Red Fox running around here. They don't blend in and seem to survive just fine.
