Warm winter day in Fairbanks
The local alpine club builds a practice mountain each year near Fox and the pipeline viewing center.
Heading east on Goldsteam road north of Fairbanks
Fairbank's ice bridge from Pikes Landing to Small tracts road. Saved me 8 miles and traffic when I lived on the north side of the river.

Thank you, Arcticthaw! I saw the first close-up moose of my life on Goldstream; and it's great to see how beautiful the river is frozen and covered. Thanks!! Great pix!

We were having lunch in Fairbanks last winter, a few people pull onto the back deck and walked in. Was pretty funny. I wouldn't think they'd let sleds on the deck.

keep posting pics
my hearts been in AK ever since i went there last year, and hoping to return for good once i finish college.
seems like you get more snow in 1 day then we get in 2 winters. 2 nights ago we actually got an accumulation of about 0.25 inches, but the rain soon after wiped it away. plus the heat/humidity here....lets just say if i never experience it again itll be too soon...

southeast. was on a cruise
trying to plan something so i can visit interior areas, since i was planning to reside there (wanted to stay by road system, pretty sure thats a big enough change w/o gettin into bush). dunno when/if thatll happen.
doubt i should plan somethin for winter (almost nobody around here knows how to drive on ice, including me. my father knows though and he can teach me) but topic + reading topics and other websites at least give me an idea of winters
a move is still a few years off, i have plenty of time to learn.

Ah. I myself haven't seen much of the state- it's on my list of things to do but honestly I love Southeast so much I've never been all that motivated to look elsewhere. I think if I had to leave I'd probably go to Cordova, very similar to Juneau with the glaciers and mountains and such. Homer would also be nice.
I only have this advice: don't necessarily write off the communities off the road system. Now, I'm not saying you should pack up and move to Hoonah, but I think you may find that the larger communities (namely Juneau, Ketchikan, and Sitka) have more amenities than similarly sized cities on the road system and down south. If you compare Juneau and what it has to a town of 30,000 people in Tennessee, you will be amazed at how much more we have, right here.
If your only experience with SE was on a cruise, you didn't really see it. Northern southeast in particular (taller mountains) is beautiful even on the sloppiest of days, but on sunny days? I am of the firm belief that there is nothing out there more glorious than a sunny SE day. (we had one today, so I'm still reeling a little)
That being said, there are many other places worth your while. Many will tell you to move to Anchorage first and spend some time there before branching out- which is generally good advice. However, if you don't like big cities, perhaps not. You might consider south central/peninsula towns like Valdez, Soldotna, and Kenai- all on the road system.
Good luck!
