Thought I'd add some pictures we've taken here and there.

This is at the Kasilof General Store. The swing is oversized and great for pictures.

This is at the Soldotna airport. I love the old style of the plane.

------------------------------------------

This place is just between Soldotna and Sterling. It's called Alaskan Carousel Carvings and is a great roadside attraction to get pictures at. There is a Jewelry store and an ice cream cone shaped coffee shop in the same parking lot. They have tons of great carvings to climb up or take pictures with, these photo's are just a couple of the attractions.

Hand carved carousel for just $1 a ride.

Guests are welcome to "saddle up".

-----------------------------------------

Somebody's homemade truck we spotted in Soldotna. The front end is some type of Chevy, the middle is a semi sleeper, and I *think* the back end is a dodge? The neighbor said it actually runs and drives! haha

-------------------------
I left the pictures big on this one so you can see all the stuff this guy has got up on his shop roofs. I spotted this place between Soldotna and Sterling while out running around. Definitely creative!

I would just die to have that old time airplane for our kids all the way to the right.

Crazy enough he's actually got a couple of cars up there in the back of the roof on the shed to the left. I *think* their vehicles from the 40's or 50's.

---------------------------

This is the Diamond M Ranch. It's in Kenai. It's a bed & breakfast with several cabins, and apartments you can rent out by the night. This is their main building with themed apartments. They weren't quite finished with the details both in and outside when we took this picture.

The double decker bus they leave open for exploration.

----------------------------------------

I'll post more in a bit

Candle I agree, that chevron sign is really neat. It helps makes the place look more quaint rather than just junky.

Blueflames, glad I could help! I have more to post from that area. I would definitely recommend a trip to Homer while your there, it's one of the best places to make a short visit too.

-------------------------

These are most of my Nikiski Pictures. My husband had a class down in Kenai last year so I tagged along and when exploring while he was glued to the books.

These two photo's were taken off of Nikiski beach before they restricted access. The bottom photo is of the two oil platforms in the background.

Visiting Nikiski was like traveling back in time 60 years! Tons of Junkyards with nothing newer than a 70's vehicle, and tons of abandoned buildings. It was a neat place to visit.

The only vintage vehicle I saw that was fully restored.

Abandoned half built house.

The old "Nikiski Arcade" - Abandoned

"Magnetics of Alaska" - Abandoned

"Lighthouse Inn" - Abandoned

Lighthouse Inn again

----------------------------
Places around Nikiski that haven't been abandoned yet.

The Nikiski Pool. Check out that roof!

Just by those windows my guess this place hasn't been recently updated.

This was a storage building... Apparently they ran out of storage space? That pile of baskets is litterally as tall as the building.

Super cute little house I spotted on the way out to Nikiski. It set right on the bluffs looking out over the water if I remember correctly.

Daniels Lake in Nikiski. Isn't it beautiful?

thanks Bossco...we traveled all over Alaska in 1982 and there wasn't much in Home then compared to now! hubby was back 3 years ago to help my brother on his place in Nikiski. We have since bought land on Georgine Lake and hope to be up this summer, build next year and move up permanently. That's the plan right now anyway but got lots to do here, sell the house etc. But love seeing the pic's it just makes us want to move things along to get be living there!!

Ok these are some of the Kenai/Soldotna Area....

This is a little mini church. It has 3 pews in it, a few bibles, and a few song books. When I was down there they left it unlocked 24/7. Regular services are held in the big dome church in the background - the little one is just for looks and after hours I guess.

This little dome home wasn't far from the little church above. Something Hobit-esque about it made me want to take a picture.

This house was out near the Kenai Landing. The bottom half of the house is sided with wood rounds... Cute, original, and creative of the owners. It looks much better in person.

This place is "Kenai Landing". That left wing is filled with shops that totally reminded me of Pikes Market in Seattle. The right wing is a huge fancy restaraunt. Everything was closed when I drove out there, which was a bummer because it's a bit of a long drive out there. To the left of these pictures is a few other buildings which is where the lodgings are. The whole place is an old cannary I guess. Sometime in the future I have GOT to make it out there during business hours.

This was out at Kenai Landing also.

This was at the Kenai Museum. They had so many neat things - "concretion rocks" being one of them.
The story on the photo above....
"This trophy size catch was hooked and landed on July 9th 1987 after a 2 hour struggle to reel it in. They bent the grappling hook, and broke the snag into three pieces pulling it up. Estimated 600 lbs when wet and contains at least 2,500 lures, most of them being Spin-N-Glos with sinkers and swivels. In addition it also includes snagged spark plugs, a complete fishing rig, and several pieces of drift wood."

Imagine my surprise when I drove past HERBIE! Never would have thought I'd run across a star living in Kenai. I was so tempted to knock on the door and beg them to take me for a drive.

Old Russian Orthodox Church in the old historic part of Kenai. Part of it was being repaired.

An even older Russian Orthodox Church also in the old historic part of Kenai.

Talk about retro! I found this playground near the historic district of Kenai... Not far from the churches.
