Bruce Crow was originally a BIA school teacher. Except he didn't exactly see eye to eye with the BIA about a few things...

He was teaching in Kwigillingok (I think this was after the schools were turned over to State Operated Schools, but it may still have been the BIA), and they actually sent out a memorandum to teachers saying they were not allowed to "fraternize" with locals in Native villages. He literally made them eat that letter, though when they demanded that everyone return all copies of it he refused to give them his copy.

That was, if I remember right, about the time he moved to Bethel and ceased teaching in schools any more.

One of Bruce's daughters lived up the river for a few years, and we used to baby sit her kids. I can't remember the mother's or father's names, but the kids were Rosie, Buzzy and Nathan. I haven't seen them as adults, but they were really loveable little kids!

Floyd and Starlight, Bruce Crow's old Barge and other various tugs and barges here.

Old Tugs at the Old Airport.

Not sure on the age of this old barge, it's been there before my time.

Warp, great photos and THANKS! I don't see the "Tammy" in any of these, but this one photo is pretty much what she looked like, but these are a bit different or could have been modified a bit since I last saw her too.

It has also been about forty some odd years since I last saw her. But there were three decks, the main, second was the Captains quarters and then the third deck was the bridge on the Tammy.

She had four props from having two old Navy landing crafts welded together, with four 671 Detroit Engines turning them. I don't recall the stern area having that much deck space either, but time has "Warped" my memory a bit too...

But again, thanks for the photos, really neat to see how many different barges have come an gone since then... There was one call the Cinnabar that we passed alot of the time on the river too, it was run by a guy and his family, I was told he faded away due to competition with other barge line companies.

On Friday I'll head back up to Steamboat Slough and park the truck and bike in a little ways to where there is a triple decker sitting in overgrowth. I don't recall seeing a name on it either. I will work on it though!

Default Fat Bikes?

These bikes look cool, I have never heard of a fatbike until I read it on here (I am glad there was a pic to explain) but I don't understand what they are used for? Please explain to a soon newbie to Alaska.
