There is a high mortality rate of drunks in Alaska doing stupid things while drinking, it is self inflicted death by stupidity, but not suicide as Sity pointed out. But Suicide rates aren't alway drunk either, they are heavily depressed and that can far outweigh needing alcohol to end one's life if the depression is that heavy!

But for most of Alaskans, they are in fact a happy lot! Bit grumpy at times, but that has to do with midnight aurora activity radiation, it gets you when you're sleeping!

Yup! I can attest to that one for sure. My closest friend in Point Hope was my wifes youngest brother Kaumalaq 14. (Comb a look) I always told him; please don't drink alcohol when you get older. young teens were drinking heavily in the village andi it made me sick to see the manner in which these young people would rush to destroy themselves over this poison. They just can't handle alcohol; they want too much! and more.

Kaum was walking through the village one morning; I had just left; he was smiling oh so big and when people see you that way- they wonder why you are so happy! Suvich? (what are you doing?) Ida said to Kaum when she saw him smiling. He said .. Oh I have been waiting for this day.... ... for a long time. Today is my 18th birthday he said to her. Ovah she said.... (here)and opened her parky and handed Kaum a bottlel of whiskey. Kaum took off to his best friend's house. Saul & Kaum were the closest of friends since childhood. Hey look what I got Kaum said to Saul... They began to drink it straight out of the bottle. Once they were totally crocked and out of their minds laughing. Saul said hey look Kaum... and he pulled out a brand new .357 magnum. Wow.. Lets play.... ... russian roulette.. you go first Kaum said. Boom - Saul shot Kaum right in the forehead - game over !!

Saul got 5 years for killing his very best friend. I haven't stopped crying since. Every time I see Ida.. I get so upset - I have to grit my teeth and pretend I got over that tragedy. But ironically - Ida is a multi- millionaire.. she spends all her money on 4th ave getting people drunk for 30 years time.

Just the thought of having to move to the lesser-48 is enough to cause most suicides in Alaska.
