Whether or not there is a gun or bear spray involved most of the time when a bear attacks the outcome is determined by what the bear damn well wants to do.

I think there is a lot more cases of dead bears than mauled people.

Maybe so but when a bear attacks suddenly at close range my money is on Yogi.

Decisions, decisions. 17 rounds of 9mm or six rounds of .44 magnum. A truly interesting question when your life depends on it...

That's like comparing spitballs to marbles. If I was standing at the gun counter and looking for a firearm for bear protection I wouldn't even ask "can I look at that 9?"

147 grains 9mm or 300 grain hard cast core 44 mag.......

I'm just thinking I might panic and miss with a couple or three rounds before I started hitting. I agree there is no ballistic contest. I agree a grizz could likely absorb 17 rounds of 9mm ball. I read of an incident from WW2 when a Navy Chief put 36 rounds out of a 50 round drum from a .45 acp Thompson into a bear and still got mauled to death. They found the bear bled to death about a mile away.

Nope, proved that once already, bear would have made a nice rug if it wasn't for the large holes.

Well if you panic easily, then you may be in trouble, but I bet in a full panic, you can run like the wind and make the bear work for his dinner... Just a little bit of work though!

As far as the machine gun thing, that is an Internet story that uses different amounts of ammo to shoot the bear. If you hit any big bear with 36 rounds of .45, it would cut him in half, no one slug may have killed the bear quickly, but a burst of ten would pretty much roll him over and 36 would really mess up his day!

Tigers use to show up at gunfights in Vietnam and many were killed with M-16's cutting them almost in half. They knew that the sound of gunfire meant free meals. Deer hunters on Kodiak will draw bears in when the bear hears a deer being shot, the bear just wants the deer, not the hunter.
