And is why it's nice to get a moose in the fall to help take away some of the burden of buying high dollar low grade meat! Or a sheep or a goat. Or a caribou. And fish. Anything helps.
Amen to that. |

We have to wait on getting our own moose until we are residents for a year because the license cost is pretty high.
We are back in Fairbanks today. My husband is still trying to find a job,not fun. He has put in a ton of applications and hopefully once break up happens something will come up. Word of advice to anyone planning on coming up here SECURE a job BEFORE you come. If we hadn't planned and saved some money back we could be in real trouble. To those of you with maybe some insider tips on jobs,I would love to get them. Hubby is more than willing to take a job that would require several weeks of being gone from home. |

And, yes, you were very smart to have money ahead. They recommend for folks coming here to have enough $$ to get by for 6-months. I worked for a social service agency and it was incredible the amount of people who came up here with no job and had the thought they could obtain a high paying job right away and ended up homeless. So glad you planned ahead. |

Yes he would be very interested in a job on the Slope however it seems it isn't what you know but someone needs to recommend you or give you some inside info in order to land a job there. We have no problem with him taking a job where he could be gone for several weeks at a time and in fact had kind of expected that so that is no issue. He is also full Native American and I have been told that several companies give preference to Natives so he has applied to a couple of them as well.
My husband was a leadman for a rock quarry in SC. He has stick welding and some Mig/tig experience, operator for front end loaders and various other equipment. Has diesel mechanic experience but not inside the engine. Has mobile equipment maintence experience as well. Also experience with crushers, and mining equipment. He would be willing to take a lower paying entry job just to get in the door. Guess you could say he isn't above doing any type of work. If we had to make house payments it would be very hard for sure. The funny thing is he hasn't been offically unemployed but for 3 days but he doesn't like not having a job so it is stressful on him. But I guess my advice is save back every penny you can because you just never know. |

Oh he doesn't seem to mind that but he wants a job that pays real money he says. I have to say that I have heard so many people in the past say how much they enjoy not going to work etc. I am GLAD my husband is one that wants to work,he has only missed 4 days of work in the last 5yrs and those were days he was just to sick to move or when I had an operation. Guess you can say I can always count on him to take care of us. He got a tip on some jobs on Ft. Wainwright and is going there this morning.
Currently at 7am it is 27 here in Fairbanks and the snow is coming down but it is suppose to stop this morning and get fairly warm. |

You might try the backdoor approach.
In addition to applying directly for jobs, get on the phone and start calling people who actually work up there. Don't hang up with anyone without asking for a couple other names to call. Keep up that networking and you will get some good leads. That's the best way to get a job on the slope. It might take a whole day or two on the phone, but that is an efficient way to do it. |

have him put in an application at UIC construction, they go to the north slope and are a Native company. Good Luck!
