Anaktuvuk Pass, at 2,200 feet elevation on the divide between the Anaktuvuk and John Rivers in the central Brooks Range, is the last remaining settlement of the Nunamiut (inland northern Inupiat Eskimo). It lies at approximately 68.143330° North Latitude and -151.735830° West Longitude
Sale, importation and possession of alcohol are banned in the village. Economic and employment opportunities are limited due to its isolation. Hunting and trapping for the sale of skins, guiding hunters, or making traditional Caribou skin masks or clothing provides income. Some residents have seasonal employment outside of the community. Caribou is the primary source of meat; other subsistence foods include trout, grayling, moose, sheep, brown bear, ptarmigan and water fowl. Due to its high elevation, summers are cool. The average temperature in January is -14°F. The average summer temperature is 50°F. Extremes have been recorded, ranging from a low of -56°F to a high of 91°F. Precipitation averages 11" annually and snowfall averages 63". The Nunamiut School in Anaktuvuk Pass has 82 students ranging from pre-school through the 12th grade with 11 teachers. |

There is a small store in town and the people are very friendly. Cable and internet are there, and the flight in and out to Fairbanks is very scenic in the clear light of day. As many as 3 planes a day, Warbelows, Wrights Air and I think Northern Air Cargo are the normal carriers. Mail is carried in daily throughout the week. 4-wheeler and snow machine are the standard forms of transport in town and out to the surrounding areas.

Anaktuvuk Pass is my home.. I LOVE it there! the scenery is breath taking and the people there are the cooliest! I miss it! Im schooling at a school in Sitka... Im VERY excited to go home for X-mas.. The holidays at Anaktuvuk Pass (AKP) are exciting and the feasting is a good get together.. The school is alright there. I wanted to take a journey so i dedcided to come here with 5 other AKP students. Last year was my junior year and it was the BEST!! the sports were very exciting! Basketball is the main sport. I was part of the basketball.. The girls basketball team had 8 participants. 3 of those girls were in 8th grade. We had a REALLY nice and EXCITING season. we had a brand new coach who is a resident at AKP. We travelled almost everyweekend to villages in the north slope. We attended th BRW tournament and was undefeated. Then somewhere at the end of Feb. the season ended for the 3 8th grader girls. That made us have a total of 5 players! We worked very had in basketball practice and soon went to regionals at Wainwright in March. We made it to the championship game playing against the Alak Huskies girls (wainwright), which was on their homecourt. Turned out that we were the girls representing the Region 1A Arctic Circle Confrence at March Madness State Championships in Anchorage. Our first game was against a team named Kalstag. We won by 41 points. Then we meet our competition, Buckland Belugas. The game was a struggle for us. At half time we were down by 8. At one of our homegames during our season. Our first game against the Alak Huskies we were down by 11 at half time. We were a very close team and we all knew that we had the skill to catch up and win, and so we did. At ANCH we pulled the same stratagy and pulled up together and won the game by 3 points. We were going to the championship game. Our last time going into the state championship game were some of our older sisters in 1997. We played against King Cove. In 2005-2006 state champs we played king cove and lost by 7 points. Then we meet again. This game was interesting because at some point were up by 25 points. Then some of us got into foul trouble, Violet Kakinya our post and center defencer had 4 fouls. King Cove Rookies scored some points. In the middle of 4th quarter we were only up by 3. The 4th quarter ended. We were jumping up for joy, eyes filled with tears, our homecrowd was estatic for making our school history to win our first state basketball title and our greatiest accomplishment. We won the king cove rookies by 7 points. We made history that day for winning the first AK basketball title with our bench empy, 5 players. We had ever lasting memories that couldnt be forgotten. We knew that without our support from our hometown that we couldnt of done it without them. Anaktuvuk is a great place to live and im a very proud Nunamiut. I ask you to come and visit our small village in a tourism during the summer..

I am not going to get to go to AKP, I have to work for a title one school and AKP is not going to be one next year. I will be going to work in Point Hope, Wainwright or Atqaksuk (I think that is how you spell it). I am sad not to be going to AKP, the pics looked so beautiful and the place sounds so nice. Thank you all for all your help.
