lol, no. Nothing here (on and around POW) but a bunch of rednecks and washed up loggers and others who can't hold any thought in their heads beyond hunting and fishing, fishing and hunting, and whatever corny jokes du jour they can remember from their domestic beer infused nights in front of the "tube".
I'm curious though as to how you're buying waterfront land between Steamboat Bay and Noyes Island when they're both on Noyes Island. |

Alaska isn't just "rednecks". You have other types of people there.

I guess all the witty, urbane and charming rednecks like me reside in Anchorage. Yes, I enjoy my fishing, but I can speak a couple of languages, am fairly literate (to the point of reading 5-8 books a week). I read the paper on a daily basis, and for a republican, am considered almost a left wing radical.
My circle of friends includes many of the same ilk as myself, have raised 3 boys to question the ideas society takes for granted, and can even, gasp, dress in something beyond the deriguere Carhartts and Jeans. I own 12 ties and numerous dress shirts in various hues, have been known to comb my hair and OMG, shined a pair of shoes for church (leather, not my usual Rangers or Sorrells). But I must come off as a semi-literate, knuckle-dragging, chauvinistic example of the male side of the race. I have found many like minded gentlemen in this forum, and they all seem to reside in the little paradise we call Alaska. I can't believe that we are the only representatives of erudite and educated males here. But I could be mistaken (wrong seems to be a little harsh a word, and has such negative connotations). Let me know if I'm mistaken. |

Mal, your posts here have always portrayed you as a person with a wider world view than what I was talking about; I can say the same for Rance. Again, my post was about POW., And I am well aware that the population here is not representative of the majority of the rest of the state (kind reminds me of Wasilla though). In no way do you come off as 'a semi-literate, knuckle-dragger I dunno though, some of the brightest, most enjoyable people I know are the most non-pretentious...and...the ones obsessed with their 'status' in life...their houses, cars, degrees can be so boring. Just my 2 cents. But, Mal, I gotta tell you, 12 ties...that's pushing it. |

Sorry, Rainy.
I didn't miss the parentheses, but I have found some pretty nice folks down SE way as well. I will have to admit to ignorance as to the general male population on POW island. And that makes my post a mistake. Sorry again. |

Well..I wasn't only talking about the male population...and of course I'm not talking about every resident.
What happened here was the kind of logging practices that brought the bottom feeders of that occupation, and they brought their culture with them. Because no reputable logger or anyone to whom integrity was something more than just a four syllable word would have done what they have done. We also get a lot of runaway types from outside here...disproportionately more so, I think, than the other areas of the state, simply by virtue of geography. The people here have never had to band together to get through a winter. I think that makes a difference in the general pulse of a community. Quite a few of the people who live in my immediate area would have been run out of where I used to live, particularly the child molesters (11 sex offenders within a mile from where I'm sitting). |

I feel your innerconflict and disappiontment. I am looking to move to Anchorage in the next year from the only place I know as home, Phoenix, Arizona. I want to leave Arizona for the same reasons you want to leave Alaka. Things have changed so much... I hope to find home again in Anchorage- a place with trees, water and hopefully people with family values.
