The drive-in movie theater is right down the road from the Sonic Drive-In here in Anchorage. All summer they are playing that old John Wayne movie "North to Alaska" with complimentary copies of Johnny Horton's greatest hits.

I think Valdez does something in the winter where they project a movie onto a snow bank. I'm not sure if they have it set up as a drive in though...

There was at one time three drive-in's in Anchorage. The Bilikin on Muldoon, the Fireweed on Fireweed and on on the Seward Highway by Dowling called the Polar something. The Bilikin was the last to close, but the Fireweed had its screen up for a couple decades if I recall after the parking area had been turned into self storage buildings.

But unless someone is really looking to see a movie at a drive in, you're pretty much out of luck!

When the Bilikin was on its wind down, they started showing porno type flicks and kids from the new subdivisions in the area use to go to the Mountain side of the theater and watch the shows from outside the fence in the scrubs.

In the winter they use to have speakers to put in your window and then electric heaters in the other so people wouldn't run their engines in the winter to create ice fog that blocked the screen! Heaters were pretty noisy so you had the speakers blaring to hear the Movie.

Anchorage was fun then!

I'm surprised to hear that there have ever been any here. We don't have amusement parks, either, just the occasional traveling carnival and rides at the fair.

Urgent Care in Juneau had a drive-in movie night a few months ago. But I'm not sure why.
