Hello all. I'm trying to decide where I want to live in the future and one of the states i'm looking at is Alaska. I will not move anywhere for a while so i'm just thinking right now. I would like to know from those who live in Alaska what do they think are the pros and cons of living in Alaska?

Thank you all who reply.

The answer is as follows: if you have a lot of money there aren't any pros and cons, since you can offset the high cost of living.

a. If it's too cold for your taste, you can spend time in Hawaii or somewhere warm

b. If rent or housing is too expensive, no problem

c. If you need the best winter clothing, not problems

d. If the cost of gasoline, or heating fuel, or electricity are too high: no problems

e. If you are fed-up of the winter darkness, no problems since you can go anywhere you like temporarily and then come back during the summer

f. If you want lots of privacy, specially outside a town or city: no problems since you can buy a very large lot with several acres of land around a nice house

g. If you have to go to the hospital on an emergency, once they have stabilized you: no problems since you can be flown to any real good hospital around the nation (ours aren't the best, except for being expensive)

You'll save a fortune on summer wear.

The rainclouds stay light until well after midnight. Allegedly the sun is up there too but I haven;t been able to verify that this "summer".

Many positive and wonderful wilderness experiences await you along with 152,825 of your new best friends who will be sharing it with you.

You'll love being in a place that can't be shipped to as the business can't send their merchandise outside of the United States.

You won't run out of room to store the thanksgiving leftovers, wrap them up and leave them on the deck, they'll keep for weeks. As a bonus, beer and other beverages will cool off rapidly. Remember this as you may need lots of beer to get through the winter.

You'll never have to worry about dry rot. Damp rot might be an issue.....

blather, rinse, repeat

Cons:
It's really expensive here.
There's stuff you can't get shipped here.
There's stuff you can't get here.
There aren't a lot of roads.
In the winter there are very few daylight hours, and depending on where in the state you live, the weather might also be harsh.
The mosquitoes are voracious.

Pros:
You get paid to live here.
There's no state tax.
It's amazingly gorgeous.
Lots of outdoorsy opportunities.
In the summer there are a LOT of daylight hours, and it stays cool enough that you can actually enjoy them.
Crime rates are fairly low.

Personally, I am loving it so far, but I haven't hit my first winter yet...

Honestly without more info about you its rather hard to give you any serious advice.

If you come to Alaska and end up just staying in Anchorage, well I feel you are really better off in the lower48.

If you plan to live in a smaller city/village then you had better hope you have a large sum of money saved or a very good job lined up.

Alaska is not some haven for anyone who wants out of the so called ratrace, you have to be willing to work hard here, or have worked hard prior to coming here.

Either way I wish you the best of luck.
