Hubby and I are headed up to F'banks in 3 weeks, driving from Ohio. Looked at the Milepost, looked at maps. Would like some insight from those who have done it about the drive.

Family in F'banks say that they heard gas was almost $10 /gallon on the Alcan this summer. True? thinking of pitching a tent along the road as we go but again, have been cautioned to sleep in the truck or get a room. will be traveling with a cat and a dog. We have to decide if we want to drive a 20' Uhaul towing a vehicle or pay a mover ( no help from employers) and drive our SUV.

Excited for the move but this part is causing some anxiety. Checked the ferry - too spendy! so, experts, share your wisdom with this newcomer!

You can find the latest Canadian prices on gas for every town with a Google search. The last time I looked it was around $5.00 to $5.50 in the remote areas. I'm sure there are some places between towns that are spendy but that is why they made gas cans. With a 500 mile gas supply you can get to the cheaper gas.

We have driven back & forth on the Alcan numerous times with a cat & dog. We use motel rooms so the poor cat can get out of his cage & roam safely. It's a beautiful drive that hopefully you will enjoy. We've done it with a 20'ft uHaul towing a vehicle with no problems.

Have fun!

We just got back to MN and gas was not $10/gallon in Canada. I am not sure of the exact prices, but they seemed to be in the $5.00+ range.

We are packing up our home in Minnesota and moving back up permanently in August (husband is a school counselor in AK). We will be driving a 17 ft U Haul and our Suburban with a 5x8 trailer. We plan on doing a lot of tent camping this time. Hotels are expensive! We are also selling a ton of our stuff before we go and bought some furniture from the people who sold us the house.

Good luck with your move! I have driven up and back a couple of times now and it is a gorgeous drive!

I will make you feel even better about gas prices in Canada. In Alberta - which you will be driving thru (Calgary and Edmonton are two major cities in Alberta) has gas prices from $1.099 to $1.169 a liter, which is $4.15 to $4.42 a gal.

If you go thru British Colombia you will pay more for fuel. ($1.35 - $1.42 a liter). Unfortunately, Northwest Territories didn't have any published prices on gas buddy, so I have no idea. Alaska itself still has over $4/gal prices in cities.

Planning on taking the trip this summer and driving the Top of the World Highway...

Have a safe trip.

You better take a look at road closures. The road washed out late last week.
