Maybe after they freeze their butts off because they cannot get the oil to heat and power their homes this winter they will realize the depth of their mistake. I agree with Meera Kohler's choice to make the community pay a surcharge for these "preventable costs."

The rest of the village probably played a pretty passive aggressive part in this BS; that seems to be the growing trend. I'd put serious money on area residents knowing what was going on and covering it up. Happens on POW all the time.
Of course, some smartass will come along and say it's because the Native youths are disenfranchised -- but that's cowardly BS.

I agree; this community needs to pay for what it allowed to happen.

I really like the saying it takes a village to raise a child. I think that we should be involved in young peoples raising even if they are not yours. We all know right from wrong so don't be afraid to correct a young one when you see them straying off the right path.

That's the way it used to be years ago, not necessarily the whole village looking over the kids, but family members, police officers, and friends of the family.

Village pledges support for threatened contractor

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — The northwest Alaska community of Stebbins has pledged to protect construction workers who walked off a major village project after they were threatened by juveniles.

City administrator Nora Toms said Friday that the community hosted a meeting with contractor STJ Inc., utility representatives and state officials and pledged to provide a public safety officer to protect workers as they complete a petroleum storage project. "The crew is coming back on Monday," she said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press.

Alaska State Troopers heard about the incident afterward and flew to the village Wednesday. They attended the community meeting Thursday night and arrested two juveniles Friday.

The juveniles were charged with vehicle theft, multiple assault counts, criminal mischief and reckless driving, Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters said. They were transported to the youth correctional facility in Nome.

Alaska Village Electric Cooperative spokeswoman Anna Sattler said the construction company likely will finish the project with its own security personnel on hand until a third juvenile is taken into custody.

Yeah, they will freeze to death or get some major emergency funds from the state to cover for stupid! Then they will fly gas out at twelve bucks a gallon!
