I live in what's considered a semi-rural area and worry about it all the time. I know that some growth is necessary and good but when is enough, enough? I don't mind driving 20 miles to the nearest shopping mall or 12 miles to Wal-mart even the 8 1/2 miles to the grocery store.( that's why we chose to move here) I like seeing farms and trees and open space while I'm doing that driving. They have just approved a Wal-mart in "town" and I'm not real happy about it.
I grew up in So. Fla where there is very little open space left except the Everglades and that's only because it's protected land. I got tired of looking at strip malls and box stores every where (and let's not mention the traffic) which is why we moved. I just want to keep my little town just that a little town. I know it's unreasonable and probably a little selfish but heck-I don't care!!

Okay I'm done venting and climbing off my soapbox now....
I agree with you 100%. Where I live in Alaska it has grown and wayyy too many people have moved here. They come here with their attitudes and want to make it just like the place they left. So it's like why did you leave, go back! No you're not selfish, once towns get overcrowded they become unliveable.

Haha, I say that all in jest, though. It's just too damn easy to make fun of Wasilla, with a name and a governor like that.
The Dena'ina (Tanaina) Indians called the area Benteh, meaning 'among the lakes'. Wasilla is surrounded by many lakes including Lake Lucille and Wasilla Lake.

Wasilla was named after a respected local Dena'ina Indian, Chief Wasilla. In the Dena'ina language, "Wasilla" is said to mean 'breath of air'. Other sources claim the chief derived his name from the Russian language and that 'Vasili' is a variation of the Russian name 'William'.

And if you're in Juneau....she's your governor too lol.

Nah. She's never here, and when she is all she does figure out sneaky ways for the capital should be moved to Anchorage. Tsk tsk.

They should move it to Bethel, then all them yahoo senators and reps could see how hard it is to live off the road system/ferry system. Then they'll realize why we need the money out in rural Alaska. (Yea, right.)

Years ago a collegue of mine working at the Fairbanks Tollcenter used to say the legislature should be moved... to Wainright! (The fellow had worked as an installer on the traveling crew, and that was in his mind the absolute worst place he'd ever been "stuck".)

I like Wainright myself, but I like that basic idea for the Legislator even more!

But... I'm not sure if we should restrict them to places smaller than Barrow and Bethel, or allow them that much convenience once every three or four years. If they met in Wainwright, Kaktovik, Tuluksak, Koyuk, Shishmaref, and so on... well they sure as Hell would get the business done a whole lot faster, and they might even begin to understand why the state should spend money on somewhere other than Anchorage.

So the legislators see Anchorage as the place where all the money should be spent... Do they spend the budget on anything useful?
