Man without arms or legs swims frigid Bering Strait

(Reuters) - A French swimmer who lacks legs and arms has successfully swum the frigid waters separating Alaska and Russia with the aid of paddle-like prosthetics, expedition representatives said Saturday.

Philippe Croizon, whose limbs were amputated after a 1994 electrical accident at age 26, completed his swim late Friday from Alaska's Little Diomede Island to the Russian maritime border near Big Diomede Island. Croizon's website said the expected direct distance of the swim was to be about 2.5 miles.

Croizon had intended to swim all the way to the shoreline of Big Diomede, but regional Russian authorities denied him permission to enter the territory, expedition representatives said.

Another fine example of complete misrepresentation bordering on fraud by Reuters. The Bering Sea, at its narrowest point between Alaska and Russia is 53 miles, not a paltry 2.5 miles.

The article does not include a photo of Philippe Croizon, but he does have arms to the elbow, and legs to his knees. I found this photo:

What do you call a man with no arms or legs attempting to swim the Bering Sea? BOB!

Who says its fraud, the article says Phillipe swam to the MARITIME border of Russia and didn't swim onto actual Russian territory. Nice job making fun of a disabled man like a bunch of classless rubes too.

Give him swimming flippers on both ends and he'll have a great chance. Most sea fish have a large rear tail and front fins for direction. How would he be any different with flippers? Was he born like this?

In the very first sentence of the article it states: "A French swimmer who lacks legs and arms has successfully swum the frigid waters separating Alaska and Russia with the aid of paddle-like prosthetics, expedition representatives said Saturday."

He did not successfully swim the waters separating Alaska and Russia. He only swam less than 5% of the waters separating Alaska and Russia. Which makes their statement a deliberate lie.

No, the ones "making fun" of a "disabled man" is Reuters. By overhyping his accomplishment as something it is not, Reuters is patronizing and insulting the handicapped in typical stereotypical fashion. And the only "clueless rube" around here is the one that for some reason is complelled to chime in and start flapping his jaw in defense of the media hacks unwilling to report the truth.

Are you suggesting that the Diomedes aren't "really" a part of their respective countries?

Little Diomede (Alaska) and Big Diomede (Russia) are in fact only 3 miles apart. Upon leaving Alaska, he swam 2.5 miles of that distance, until being stopped from entering Russia by the Russians.
