Default and then there's the airplane thing

Another consideration is the airplane thing. Anchorage is a major aviation hub for both huge cargo planes and little puddle jumpers. Plus there's the military bases with the jets. There's almost nowhere in ANC where you are very far from some pretty heavy-duty airplane noise. If you really, really want some peace and quiet keep that in mind. Aviation is a necessity for Alaska, the majority of the state depends on it absolutely so just give up entirely the notion that any amount of noise complaining will change anything.

When we lived there we ended up in Eagle River, but we considered places from downtown to Wasilla. We were pretty enthusiastic about a place in Chugiak, until the train came through, again. And again. And again....

If you're serious about moving, I very strongly recommend that you go for an extended visit in person, preferably not in the summer. If you spend a couple weeks slogging through the melting slush, watching all the winters garbage and frozen dog crap re-appear and you STILL want to live there, the summers will only make it better.
