Would appreciate any recommendations on where to purchase tire chains or cables for driving in icy conditions in Anchorage. Thanks!

Schucks or maybe Napa should have them. Maybe even Walmart if you can force yourself to go in one!

Cheap imports can be purchased almost anywhere. Shucks, Napa, Johnston's, AIH, etc. Or if you want USA quality ones - Six Roblees, but of course they cost twice as much.

Not available locally but if a person needs or thinks they need chains, look into a device called the Spike Spider.

Spikes-Spider: Easier, Better than Tire Chains - Winter Driving

otherwise, I'd go with ones from 6 robbers.

Is it typical to use chains in Anchorage? I think looking into good studded snow tires might make more sense.

Those spider spikes are interesting looking but spendy... $615 per PAIR for my vehicle and that is the cheapest set...

FWIW, I looked and found decent set of chains rated for heavy duty use (I have a diesel truck) that they are around $130.00 per pair for my vehicle.

Nope. Most people run snow tires with studs. The only place you usually see chains are on the snow plow trucks.

I just use all weather tires on my truck and the wife's car. There's maybe a day or two a month in the winter where it's slick. But we don't commute to Anchorage, so that helps.

Whew! I know I can be unobservant, but I was wondering if I'd really outdone myself last winter.

You wouldnt want to commute with chains on anyways.

I grew up on Skyline drive in Eagle River before it was paved and regraded, and was at the time pretty handy with the tire chains. I wouldnt ever run from ER to A town with them on though.
