Anchorage for me. Seems like a nice mid-sized city, and with a relatively short drive you can have some space to yourself.

I picked the Kenai Peninsula. I'm committed to Matsu till my son graduates high school though.

BTW, I like Starbucks.

I would give anything to have a Starbucks Frapp right now. Well maybe not any thing but real close. I drove through Atlanta a couple, of times, on my way from Iowa to Fla. It is big. Of course, I grew up outside of L.A. so is I hadn't been freshly down from Anc -- the Anc of the 70s -- it probably wouldn't have fazed me. But with your kind of comparison you are right.

I've been to Los Angeles as well. It shocked me how big the city was, and I'm only talking about the city limits. I saw Santa Monica, Long Beach, Glendale, the Griffith Observatory. I didn't even go to Orange County. I was impressed.

I've seen pictures of Anchorage. What impresses me is the panoramic view. The mountains, the sea.

I went to College in Orange County and graduated from HS in Ventura. Lived all over SoCal can't say I miss any of it. Smog people etc. The views from Anc ARE spectacular!! Most of Alaska is a new wonderland every day, and night. Something you truly cannot appreciate until you experience it.

The closest I ever came to Alaska was the Seattle area when I lived up there. There is nothing like seeing the Cascade Mountains. I've never seen Alaska. I want to make it up there in time for the aurora borealis.

I never had a problem with the people in Los Angeles. As for the smog, I saw it. Atlanta has smog issues as well. At least in LA, you can go to the beach.

As to me, it was pleasant to me everywhere where I was in Alaska. Though there can be I would stop in Juneau.

Homer or Sitka. Both fabulous. Haines runs a close second.

I voted for Fairbanks.
Not for the beauty but for the brutally cold weather that lasts for an extended period of time compared to the lower 48.
The reason is to be in an area that controls it's human population numbers by the weather.
The tourists will have a nice time then they will leave.

I lived in Helena Montana for 14 years leaving in 2008.
Many people moved to the area and then within a year or two would move away mainly due to the long, dark, very cold and dreary winters that would hang on sometimes to the middle of May.

I consider Fairbanks to be similar to Helena climate wise with Fairbanks winter being colder, darker and snowier.

Fairbanks saving grace when it comes to controlling growth is it's geographic location.
