Default Young and looking to move away..

Hi, I'm 17 and looking to move to Alaska in the next few years, I'v always admired Alaska and it's a place i'v researched alot about especially moving there, as of now i am living in Liverpool which is full of gang rivalry and near enough every day there's gangs fighting, stabbing and shooting outside my house which is a place i want to be living around especially when i've got my first child due in a couple of months with my partner.. My family have said they will support me on this, but was hoping for other opinions from people that live in Alaska who may be able to tell me abit more about cost of living per year, job opportunities in the area and what i have to do to get a visa to move at such a young age.
thanks alot.

Liverpool? as in Liverpool UK? If so, you will need a visa to stay in the US. Either work visa (very hard to get), spousal visa (meaning you have to marry someone from the US) or a student visa. Here's where to start.. USCIS Home Page

It's one heck of a lot of work, I know, my wife is from the Lake District and moved here 5 years ago.

A student visa is perhaps one of the easier to obtain. And.....while you are here, studying your butt off, there is always time to look around, get to know the locals, find out of this is really someplace you really want to spend a major portion of your life. 1. Yes it will be really different, not just the accents and idioms 2. I suspect the climate in Alaska is similar to northern Scotland, just on a MUCH larger scale. London is just about as far north as is New York, 3. there is also about a ten or eleven hour time difference, after the first two weeks this difference diminishes. Once you are here, have been here for a while, have friends etc, it is easier to get them to allow you to stay- references really do help. If you rob banks, mug little old ladies, sell dope to kids, you will, at some point, probably be asked to leave. If you show good common sense and are reasonably easy to get along with and endowed with a good sense of humor, people will probably speak well on your behalf. Good Luck.

My advice is to see the world first and make Alaska your last stop. Once you've been to Alaska everywhere else will appear dull and dreary.

I read that somewhere by someone who DID travel the world first.

I ahve traveled a LOT through much of the world and have even lived in England in Oxfordshire (Witney to be precise - Hi Moosketeer). Alaska is an experience that has to be desired, and then acted upon. Beauty is a moment away and no camera can truly do it justice (Rance comes REAL close).

I read of Alaska in my 2nd grade geograghy book as a small young kid in Catholic school in Chicago. The mountains were calling to me, and I couldn't answer. I traveled the world in the military and saw many more mountains. They were what drew my eye. But they weren't Alaska. I came up here for a job years ago and stayed. Am I disappointed. Nope. Not yet. Still haven't seen it all. Nothing beats a flight in a small plane to the middle of nowhere and scenery that others can only see in National Geograghic. Friends who ask, "How are you?" and really care what the answer is. If it calls, answer it. Find your mountains and claim them everyday at sunrise and laugh because they're yours alone.

I don't believe a word this guy (?) is saying. Asking questions to ordinary folks when he can get the legal and proper answers from an office across his town.

No offence lad, but i was only asking to get some advice i did't say i want you too ring me up explain everything , incase you didn't notice i wanted to know what the area was like aswell and advice from people who live there or people who may have moved from England before.

Thanks for the advice, I shall look into a Student Visa, get help from my step dad who turned down moving to Alberta,Canada last year due to my mum not move so far away from the family.

I have thought about other places in America/Canada, but i think Alaska appeals to me.

No i won't be robbing old ladies, selling drugs and other crap like that. If i buy everyone presents from England they may like me more :P .. Although i could go on holiday, marry a nice girl and be sorted, haha, or maybe not.

Michael
