Today is Veterans Day and I stopped at the Alaskan Veterans Memoral at M.P. 146 on the Parks Highway. It is in the shadow of Mount McKinley (which was cloud covered today) and took a 360 photo of the Memorial. I stop there often and today was another good reason to stop and pay respect to brothers and sisters in arms.

360 Panorama

If you get the chance, this is a very quiet place to see in person.

That's a really nice Memorial and its good to see the USCG was included. Despite what some may think or believe, they are one of our five branches of armed forces.

Well the CG has been involved in all armed conflicts since the founding of our Country.

During WWII, your chances of getting killed in the Coast Guard were better by percentage than any of the services. When the attack at Pearl Harbor began, the USCGC Taney was coming into the Harbor and the Japanese wanted to sink it to block the harbor, the ship was the first to return fire.

In Vietnam, the Coast Guard ran coastal patrols looking for weapons under Operation "Market Basket".

They are in the sandbox now with all the other forces, mostly doing Port Security.

Not once did the damn recruiter tell me any of that when I enlisted, he just said "We just save people"... Not a word about the guard in Vietnam!

The Coast Guard was also the first US Military full time presence in Alaska when it was bought from Russia. The USCGC Bear sailed in Alaskan waters for almost 50 years, it had both sails and steam.
