They weren't as active as I wished they were by the time I got to my new favorite spot, but any night with the lights is a good night. For some reason, I'm still getting "noise" on my camera. Blarg!

Yep, I changed my ISO from 400 to 200 and left my exposure at 15 seconds, the highest it will go. Yay, much clearer. I went out on my porch and saw they were still going so stepped off my porch and took some more!

Very nice pics, 1stimestar! What time of day was the one with the sun visible just on the horizon taken? The picture right above it looks like a trail of aurora is issuing from the treetop and being blown to the left be wind or something. Very cool!

Thank you for the lovely photos, 1stimestar. I was hoping someone would post pix on this thread!

I've only seen the aurora once, while in Michigan's Upper Peninsula when I was a very small child. I recall being a little spooked by it. Oh, to see it in person now! Maybe one day.

Thank you for sharing your pix.

My bro got some nice shots from Girdwood. I didn't get squat. Oh well.

That's not the sun, that's the lights of Fairbanks. To take photos of the auroras, you have to have a long exposure to let in the light. So it looks a lot lighter in the picture then it looks to the eye. The first pictures were taken around midnight and the second set was taken about 3 am.

I went out by midnight and took a few photos, but the brightest and prettiest Auroras were the ones I missed around 9:30 after Tigre79 told me about the short-term forecast. I kept my eye on this forecast after being told about it.

Thanks, Tigre!

Oh I am going to try lowering my ISO even more. I still have too much noise. But I don't do any post editing.

Yes you can use a lower ISO speed and expose longer. But there are times when it's quite dark and you may want to crank the ISO up past 400. When very dark outside I use 400, open the Tokina lens to f/2.8, and expose from 12-15 seconds depending on the landscape and other things (snow, bright things in the foreground or background, etc.).

Applications such as LightRoom remove a lot of the noise from your photos. But if you use PS Elements you can buy plugins that can be used to remove noise. These plugins can be used right within Elements, or as standalone applications: Neat Image, Noise Ninja, etc.

Tonight should be another decent night. We even saw them in Homer last night. Here's to hoping for clear skies and a "storming" night!
