I haven't found any good brisket or fried okra in Alaska, either. Or chicken fried steak that was much above high school cafeteria quality, either.

Even the US Revolution started out small/minor but quickly grew. It just takes one event to push it 'over the edge'.
It's not big news because the Separatist movement has been going since the 60's and has been a controversial and potent political force ever since and we got close to the country breaking up twice. We've already hit those big events you speak of a couple times, but the separatists just kept losing by a hair, so Canada remain united. We had a violent terrorist campaign of kidnappings, bombings, and the assassination of a British delegate in 70's that ended in martial law being declared in the streets of Montreal. There was the writing of our the constitution in the 80's with a separatist government refusing to ratify it and the failure of constitutional reforms to include Quebec which lead to the almost successful, losing by just 0.1%, 1995 referendum, and a whole variety of other issues. Canadians are just used to this.

There's also an active successionist movement in Newfoundland because it used to be a country, joined in 1949 and some people still don't like Canada. Alberta also had a secessionist movement that I'd rightly define as minor. They've calmed down now that Alberta largely wields huge amounts of power in the federation right now and definitely needs the rest of the country for labour, pipelines, having bigger clout in international trade negociations etc.

AS AN ASIDE Canada actually has a famous variety of brisket called Montreal Smoked Meat (the really good stuff can't honestly be found outside Montreal but the best stuff close to Alaska would be Dunn's Smoked Meat in DT Vancouver).

Looks like this, and it's truly something else:

Smoked, brined and spiced it's associated with the local Anglo-Jewish culture, as is the Montreal Bagels (denser and sweeter than the NY variety and always cooked in a woodburning oven).

I hear that. When I worked at Alaska Airlines in Ketchikan I had a couple of work buddies there that used to always ask me "Tell us about fried okra, again". I'd retort back, "Bring me some lumpia and I'll make you some fried okra".

I might be mistaken but isn't the requirements for growing Okra very similar to tomato's? If so, I don't know why it couldn't be grown in a green house or hoop house here.
