Any gardeners from Homer out there that can tell me about their gardening experience- Such as what kind of veggies and fruit can you grow (I did read about the berries), greenhouse/hoop house usage, soil amendments needed, any interesting/fun anecdotes about your garden you'd like to share!
Thanks! (supposed to be green!)

Supposedly its got some of the best loam soils on the planet.

There's a poster here who lives in Homer and does a bit of gardening; perhaps she'll pop along and share here experiences.

I live in Homer (though I am out of state for medical treatment now). Homer has a thriving gardening community and a fantastic garden club too. If you are on the Homer bench area you are in a micro-climate area, much warmer then up on the hills. You can have wonderful gardens there, vegetables, flowers and fruit trees. You pretty much have to use raised beds of some sort because the soil is so cool. Tomato's, green beans, cukes or any warm season vegies have to be grown in hoop houses or green houses. Any of the cabbage plant family grows fantastic there as well as potato's, carrots, beets. The soil at my place is quite acidic so I have to amend the soil for it. The Elliot Coleman gardening books are quite good for the Homer area and I would highly recommend them. Feel free to pm me if you wish. Are you living in Homer now?
