I'm looking at taking a job at Icy Strait Point for something different than my normal summer national parks job and I hoping someone could provide come insight into the town and what life is like there. I've tried searching the internet but most of what comes up deals with the shooting they had a couple of years ago.

I lived in Hoonah growing up and still have quite a few friends there.
It's a small native village. The scenery is beautiful. The people are friendly as long as you treat people right.
For insight on life there, give Tom Botts' Wilderness Blues blog a read. He's lived in Hoonah for a long time and blogs regularly on life there.

Prices are fairly high for most things. The old cannery which is now the cruise ship area is a couple of miles out of town. The road through town runs five or six miles from the cannery to the airport. It's paved. Most of the side roads aren't. After the airport there's miles and miles of old logging roads. I'm not sure how maintained they are now.

The town sits on the water and fishing & tourism are the main industries. There's a couple of small stores, a bar and a few restaurants. Housing might be an issue if it's not provided.

I'm an interp ranger with the FS in Juneau. Hoonah is... well, you're definitely talking about something very different. It's quite isolated and you'll be taking the ferry over to Juneau for major shopping. Even if you can buy it in Hoonah, chances are the prices are going to be a ton cheaper in Juneau, even factoring in the cost of the ferry tickets.

If the job is an FS position, I'm pretty sure they'll provide housing. Hoonah is a very small ranger district - I don't think there's more than 7-10 permanent employees.

FS does provide housing for permanent employees, and bunkhouse facilities for temporary or seasonal workers. The permanent housing is comprised mainly of 3-bedroom duplexes, oil heat, garage. Rent is reasonable for the employees. HRD folks are good people, most of whom have made a career in that particular assignment because the life is good.

ISP is BEAUTIFUL. It's one of the best examples of native corporation planning I've ever seen. (Stu Campbell is in charge of the food at The Point - very, very good food.) The view is great, access is floatplane or water, town is paved and school is the central focus of the community. Clinic is affiliated with the SEARHC healthcare system, fire department and EMS are staffed by very active volunteers. Nice place.
