Hi Heidi,
I lived in Healy for several years with a small child about 8 years ago. I also subbed in the school and worked at Denali, too. It's been a while, but of all the places I've lived, it was quite the most beautiful and the most rustic! I can't quite remember how we found the cabin we rented out off Stampede, but I know we spent a lot of time taking day trips out of Fairbanks talking to the waitresses and reading the post office b-board(just as mentioned previously!). I know the area has changed quite a bit the past few years, but when I lived there it was great. We weren't big on the socialization thing, but the church groups were pretty active. I know that there has always been something about Healy that is hard to break into--shall we say that the community was very protective of it's isolation? They don't encourage outsiders and don't always make it easy--although everyone was very nice and the school was good. There was a social(and economical)gap between the parkies and the coal miners, maybe that was it. Hard to explain 'cause I was never really bothered by it all. . . They had a good day care/preschool type thing back then, I remember. You might want to try calling(and calling) the the offices of the park. They get sooo many questions and interested people that you may not have much luck but maybe if you are persistant someone will remember you and help you. Call the little store, too. Have them read you their b-board. You will have better luck after Xmas and closer to spring--unless you want to rent right now. It is very tough with a family. I wouldn't suggest Cantwell unless you are desperate--although your children are small. We summered many summers in Cantwell and the only thing that is nice for kids is the school library. Although if a place on the Ridge between Cantwell and the Park was available to rent, I'd live there--many park employees live there and it is a nice community--they bus to Healy for school.
Great place, tho. It will be worth the effort once you are settled and hanging out with the park people! Best of luck!

You'll probably want to move to Akutan or St. Paul. Rent will be $1800 a month. Good luck.

Marty was pretty close on what to do to find a place in Healy. I live a few miles North of there and know a bunch of folks there and will ask around when I am home.
Hope you have a place of employment picked out, it is a bit expensive anywhere in Alaska without income.
Healy is a nice place, but windy, you even get more snow on the side of your house than in the yard...

The reason why you can't find much information about Healy is because it's not really a town, but a very few buildings by the road. It's very close to Denali Park, and off the road there are cabins or houses that belong to the few people living there.
It gets quite cold during the winter, since it's in the interior of Alaska, and to make matters worst, the wind blows like hell winter and summer since Denali is close by. It will be difficult to find a job there, so I would advise that you have a job before you move to that area, and also a place to live at. There is some seasonal work around Healy during the summer months. Rent will be expensive, unless you get a cabin without running water or plumbing. Why don't you visit first, see if you can get a job, and then move your children with you?

After I typed this long answer I realized that this is an old post.
Sorry.

Oh Great, now Cantwell is going to be over run now that you let out that secret place, next everyone will know that the crabbing fleet needs deckhands there because the price of crabs is up so high!
