I do not envy me right now.
Time for the family emergency excuse.

When they ask what the emergency is your respond that it is very private and you cant speak of it.

Sound good?

As much as I would absolutely love to take the easy route, I do owe her at least a real 'excuse', if you can call it that. The truth is, she can't really expect me to stay somewhere I'm not happy just because of a job. I guess I'll just have to tell her that and hope she understands...

Can't you put in for a transfer? At least invite your boss to Alaska for a visit. Once they've seen it, they'll know what beig homesick is all about.

I dunno about that. The best argument I've ever heard against moving the capital is that all the State's most hardened criminals are generally in one place off the road system.

No, unfortunately there are no real Starbuckses in Juneau- just the one in Freddies which is not run by Starbucks. It's run by Freddies and is licensed to sell Starbucks products.

A guy came in today with a "Capital Design" Sweatshirt. I told him I was from Juneau, and he kind of acted like he didn't believe me. He quizzed me on my history, basic geography, the like. I think I passed...?!

LOL! Excellent point. I can't argue against that logic.

I don't abhor hunting so much as if my neighbor gives my dog another deer skull to gnaw on I'm going to burn down his house.

You and house burning... violence is not the answer! Although I can see how the whole deer skull thing would get annoying, fast.
For 'da record, I don't abhor hunting either, although I'm not a fan of guns themselves. If someone wants to go out in the forest, kill an elk, bring it home and eat it, I say more power to 'ya. The whole sport hunting thing that people do down south grinds my gears like no other, though. Taking a life... for what? There is no purpose, other than simple human greed, and that is wrong.
There is a native parable of a man who goes out to hunt an orca (keet). He has tea and food with him, but he does not share it with the whale he is about to kill, nor does he thank the whale for giving its life for him and his village. He merely kills it, takes it home, and there is a great feast. But the next year, there the orcas are gone, the salmon don't run, and all the people starve. I've heard it several times, plus different renditions (in some cases it's a Walrus) from different tribes, but the idea remains the same.
