Why is it that new built modern buildings are only within the ramification of seasonal store fronts for businesses in South East Alaska? Residence homes such as in Skagway, Alaska are very old and do not bring out the sparkle charm of a first class city. It's like in Beverly Hills, California all the estate homes are very old and in LA, California all the estates are modern brand new. We need to build new homes in South East Alaska to become first class cites.

For Starters. Professional sports players who enjoy the outdoors with owning second homes. Doctors and lawyers who retire early. California real estate construction take over old homes on Alaska property building new areas of Alaskan Cities. With new higher income families move in more government services can hire other work force keeping it nice and flowing with economic growth. Why only have two kinds of industries in Alaska? Fishing & Travel.

Oh Great IDEA!!!
This is exactly what happened to Montana, particularly the Gallatin Valley area. Movie stars and rich Californians moved in and raised the housing prices astronomically! Yet the wages for regular folks is deplorable! Most people have 2 jobs just to make ends meet.

Leave it to an out of stater to come up with this sort of idea. I for one like the older buildings found in anytown Alaska. Gives the towns a special look and feel. You want highrise fancy shmancy crap, move to California.

Maybe Alaska has stiffer building codes and maybe that is why Alaska has less custom home builders. In Anchorage only a few multi million dollar homes on the market place.

I agree, to an extent. I also like the older buildings, particularly the older Russian structures. I think it gives the building character. You can see in its weathered features the kind of environment it had to endure all these years.

However, I do not think most dwellings today are designed appropriately for Alaska's environment. For one thing, garages (heated or not, attached or not) should be mandatory. The sheer number of carports in Alaska is staggering, and reminiscent of construction styles found in Washington and Oregon.

For another thing, homes in Alaska should have arctic entrances (a.k.a. "mud room") built into the design of the home, not added on as an afterthought.

Homes should be designed for their environment, and many Alaskan homes are not.

Bob, there already are plenty of rich people who have second and third homes in SE; they just aren't as ostentatious as those in other states and their homes don't tend to be in any of the towns. They're out of the way, wilderness lodge types of structures that can't be easily seen by the average person because they're off the road.
