Good Morning All-

I am reviewing Milepost maps and doing some planning. I am traveling from Alaska to Washington.

My question is about the route at Ft. St. John. I understand the Alcan starts at Dawson Creek. The suggested route is highlighted through Dawson Creek (hwy 97). Ft. St. John-Dawson Creek-Chetwynd is 109 miles.

Why would I not take hwy 29 out of Ft. St. John and drive direct to Chetwynd (87miles)?

Am I missing something?

Thanks S-

Where are you starting from and where are you hoping to get to?

Looks like you may be coming up the cassiar?

Hello-

Alaska to Washington. No Cassiar Highway involved. I have the travel proceeding down the Alcan. At Ft. St. John I am asking why I wouldn't take Hudsons Hope Loop at 87 miles to Chetwynd. The Milepost has a highlighted route from Ft. St. John to Dawson Creek and then over to Chetwynd that is 109 miles.

My route continues from Chetwynd to Prince George. I am just wondering if there is something I am missing. I do not have any reason to go see Dawson Creek. Any warnings or difficult travel on this upper loop?

The time will be about the same. The Hudson Hope loop is a slower road steeper grade hills with twists and turns. It almost makes sense to do HHL coming from the west coast.

I like Hudson's Hope route, I've taken it a couple times. I like going through Dawson Creek just so I can get pictures at Mile 0 of the Alcan, and you can also check out the old wooden Kiskatinaw Bridge just north of Dawson.

Do the Hudson's Hope route. It's a pretty drive along the Peace River. Apparently there's a big battle going on about a hydroelectric dam that will ruin that valley or something. Don't know the details, but might as well drive it while it's nice.
