Lightbulb Political leanings of Alaskans

Just thought this could be an interesting topic for discussion.

I think that most Alaskans (at least outside of Anchorage area & Juneau, which is perhaps most Alaskans right there) tend to consider themselves Republican.

However; since the Republican administration of the past way too many years has trampled all over our Constitution, I wonder how people would identify themselves now.

Here are a few thoughts:

I think the average Alaskan cares far more for liberty than for politics of fear - so why should we support a party who thrives off of our fear of fundamentalist muslims and uses that fear to destroy all that which has made our nation great?

I believe that most Alaskans care very strongly for the environment. So how is the current administration doing on this?

I know that the Republican party has traditionally espoused smaller government and less governmental intrusion into our lives. How is this administration doing there? And what about fiscal conservatism???

Although I lean a bit to the Left on many issues, I tend to agree with most people here in Alaska on major political concerns.

Just wondering where you stand . . .

wee-haawwww!!!!

And that is truly unfortunate.

I think that alot of the national Republican party philosophies haven't really taken hold here the way they have Outside. For instance, our heavily Republican legislature voted nearly unanimously to denounce the Patriot Act. Fear-mongering doesn't work in Alaska the way it does in other places because I think deep down we all know we will be dead last on Al-Qaida's hit list.

Yes, most Alaskans care about the environment. We have the most pristine and untouched state in the USA and I'm pretty sure we'd like to keep it that way. However, we also want to develop our resources (and therefore our economy) in such a way that we do it responsibly so that there can be balance between progress and concern for the environment. I think this is one area where both sides of the aisle agree. Only in Alaska do you see Democrats fully in support of ANWR exploration.

The national administration (Bush & Co) are in no way fiscally conservative nor do they practice "small government".

I'm a Democrat only because I can't stomach the Republican marriage to corporate interests and lobbyists nor can I tolerate their theocratic religious agenda. But the truth is that I'm probably somewhere in between.

Oh hell yes I'm a Republican...

Sorry. I was trying to say something sardonic or sarcastic and I simply cannot, even for the sake of dark humor, pretend to be a damned Republican.

Lightbulb One Alaskan's Political Perspective

Speaking only for myself, I am a conservative republican (not a Republican). Meaning, I consider a fiscally responsible republican form of government to be the best form of government yet devised by mankind. The Republican Party of today has become more like the Democrat Party of the 1960s, and therefore no longer represents those principles. While the Democrat Party of today has become al Qaeda's greatest ally for their own political aggrandizement.

While I never did agree with the method in which the "War Against Terrorism" is being fought, I do strongly believe that it is a war that needs to be won. Terrorist sponsoring governments can not be tolerated and must be eliminated. My views on this subject has not changed since 1979.

With regard to abuses to the US Constitution, I think both political parties are equally guilty. The Republican Party has traditionally violated the 1st and 4th Amendments, while the Democrat Party has repeatedly violated the 2nd and 10th Amendments. I strongly supported the Republican Party when they opposed the creation of the federal Department of Education in 1980, but now find their opposition has completely faded away and they now support this abomination to the US Constitution.

I also believe that a government that governs least, governs best. This embodies a small, unobtrusive government that is fiscally responsible. The Republican Party once held these same principles, but no longer. If today's Republican Party is considered "neo-conservative", then I am a "paleoconservative". I never left the Republican Party, they left me.

My views on the environment, specifically the Alaskan environment, is similar to Dipper's views. I believe we can responsibly develop our resources while maintaining the Alaska environment we have all come to love.

It seems I'm one of no party. One time or another I liked the republican side because it seemed that all the democrats in the US wanted to close all "public" lands to the public and the republicans wanted them open. But here in Alaska the republicans in the house and senate seemed to screw the bush communities over on a lot of things like education and water and sewer projects. Remember when Knowles said that the honey bucket was "going to be put in the Smithsonian" when he was done? Many villages in the Bush still have no running water and still crapping in buckets. As of yet, I haven't seen any new headway in the running water as of yet, but slowly the villages in this part are getting new sewage systems. Thats all I can think of now, I don't want to get started...(too late)

I despise politics. I don't consider myself anything. Not to mention I don't understand half the terminology used. I'm not left I'm not right I'm not liberal or conservative and I wouldn't know if I was demo or repo if either one hit me in the face. Does that make me a patriot in action?

After 8 years of Clinton, and now 8 years of Bush, I am so totally fed up with BOTH Democrats and Republicans! IMO, neither has done us much good, but there's sure been a lot of harm. I am so incensed about it I went out and joined the Constitution Party...

Oh, man. Don't even get me started... We've all gotten screwed so many times by the government, I don't even know where to start.
How about the fact that we have a president that didn't even win the election, destroying the environment, spreading homophobia, and dumping trillions of our taxpayer dollars into a pointless and for that matter potentially endless war with a country that had about as much to do with 9/11 as Greenland.
Nothing gets me angrier than when I look at my paycheck and see all the taxes that are taken out of it, and I know exactly where they are going. All my money is going towards my higher education, so that I can get a degree or two and become a productive member of society. But I don't get all the money I earn because it is going to fund the mass slaughter of US Servicemen and Iraqis alike. Tell me there isn't something wrong with that?!?
