I'm curious too. IMO, Haines and Valdez are winners. Cold Bay? Near the bottom of the barrel.

For plenty of overcast but less wind and a bit more summer heat/winter snow and a more easily accessed location, just about anywhere in SE would be better.

I used to fish in Southeast Alaska based in Ketchikan in the late 1970s. My skipper was friends with another fisherman named Pete who owned land on an island in Southeast AK which was on a bluff with a lake and creek that formed a waterfall on its way to the beach. I would live there. You could only access it by boat, iirc.

If money was no object, I would have a few places to spend time at in Alaska. For example, a spacious log home one-third up the mountain behind Cordova. In addition, I would have an air strip nearby.

Then I would own the hotel at the Black Rapids area of the Richardson, where I would spend a month or two taking photos of the Auroras when they appear on the sky. The air strip is next to the Richardson a few yards below. Otherwise, a spacious log home at the highest ground possible by Summit Lake, on a 25-acre lot to keep the neighbors far from my home and air strip.

That is my concern about Gustavus living. The home we are admiring online at the moment is sited at around 15-20' ASL. This is a few feet higher than much of the rest of the village and out of the known flood plain on the Salmon River but not high enough in the case of a serious tsunami.

I lived in Gustavus for 16 years. Which house is it? Gustavus is fairly protected from tsunamis as there are a couple of islands offshore that would intercept a lot of wave energy and it's not a straight shot from the Gulf. Yes, Gustavus is flat, but that's not the only consideration.

Good to know. It is on Faraway Rd, behind the Inn. My wife knows the seller, being a former resident. I've only visited a few times. There are other towns which objectively might be a better place to live in Alaska (money being no object here ) but the fact that our family would immediately be connected to the community through old friends can't be discounted.
