Spring is here in the Mat Su Valley. Just got out of the hot tub on my back deck and the morning sunshine is warm and bright. Scattered clouds and it is already 55 degrees at 10:00 a.m.

It does melt. Just a little late this year. The problem with gardening is the cool, cloudy summers, not the snow. The snow is something to keep in mind when you're looking for a house here, though.

I guess it depends on what you are looking for. We bought our house after it had been on the market less then a week. But the other one we were looking at had been on the market for over 6 months, it was a short sale, with a VA loan. The VA was not letting it go without a fight. After we had been waiting for an answer from the VA for nearly 6 weeks, we gave up and moved on.

Any advice on moving to Petersburg? My son is a Charter Capt. here in NJ and went to Gustavus and loved it... now he wants to buy a lodge in Petersburg.... my feeling is he should go again before making such a drastic change.... any residents have words of wisdom?

I'd definitely visit Petersburg before committing to a move. Great place, but get to know the locals and feel it out. Visit in winter or spring, not for the weather but to feel out the locals when all the seasonal residents are gone.

There was just a buying Alaska episode on Gustavus.... You should try and watch it - the realtor was going over all of the things to watch out for in Gustavus. From sinking, saturated ground, to the possibility of needing a water softener/filter to make the ground water drinkable.
