But let's say.. usually when we talk left vs. right.. cause if you throw the idea of a "police state" into the mix.. that's when you have the Right, wanting Gov't in everything...

Used to be Dems vs. Reps was about what to do with the money the gov't took from it's people...

I'd say Alaskans are more interested in keeping their affairs internal to the state, and instead of being treated as a Modern Colony of the US with Decisions being made 4000 miles away.

Well, it's also an excellent reason not to build The Road. Then they'll be able to escape to Mexico!

Thumbs up Ditto!

Gee, mal_fisk, that was what I was going to say, almost. I'll just quote what you said and make a few minor modifications:

Quote:
Well, as a hard-corps or is that herd-core (Mooo) right-wing ex-military republican (small "R"), let me just say that supporting our current administration is not on my list of things to do this week (month, year, decade - pick one). I find myself in agreement with a lot of my bleeding heart ex-hippy friends on too many issues that count (beyond illegal drugs). That still doesn't make me a Democrat. I disagree on guns, but agree on pro-choice, disagree on extended welfare rolls, and agree on decriminalization of marijuana. (Viet Nam era thing there). I agree with most of the Patriot Act (Big Brother is watching you) and think the military is a pretty OK institution. If the NSA is listening in to my phone conversations, I don't care much (my life is pretty dull and I don't think they're getting their jollies listening to me). What does that make me? A typical American with a smorgasboard of ideas and opinions. Which is what any Alaskan is. We tend to be as individualistic as the land we live on. The politics may differ between ouselves and our neighbors, but most of us agree to disagree, and let the other guy make his own mistakes. He/ she will let me do the same. This is not California (thankfully), where guys like me are considered totally nuts. I admit to being as different from the next guy as he is from his neighbor. I'm fine with that.

We don't poke our noses into the neighbors backyard here. If my neighbor abhors hunting, he won't throw a hissy fit over the moose that the neighbor brings home from his hunt. He's more likely to shrug his shoulders and walk away. Of course, I don't personally know anyone here that abhors hunting. {The rest was deleted}

After much thought and consideration (is 2 minutes enough)...I'm gonna call myself an emotionally logic Libertarian. But I still don't know what leaning left or right means. Someday I'll burn a big ol fatty and ponder on this.

Hey Rance, you may have nailed the general Alaskan political vibe.

If you were to try and lump the whole state together (as all political polls do, if they consider Alaska at all that is) you'd probably have to label us as....expediant libertarians.

We generally want the government to leave us alone, but we'll gladly take their money if we have to.

Funny how that whole "smaller govt., butt out of our biz" thing kind dies on the vine when the federal dollars come rolling in.

Libertarians want everyone to pay taxes but themselves. I only know of one of them, all the rest who keep telling me they're libertarians don't know what the Libertarian Party platform really says.

They like the idea of Liberty, but Libertarianism won't result in providing what they want.

Read up on it, and see if you could strictly apply it in your life.

I'll drink to that!

Just want to take a moment to apologize to the readers of this thread for steering it further off course than any of Colombus's expeditions. I fear I let my temper get the better of myself at times.

Hard to say which is the most right-wing but Houston, Alaska had a bar right on the highway that for a number of years had a full size mock up of a lynching on their ridge pole of the building, right out front, visible to all who passed on the highway.
