Unalakleet is beautiful. As far as villages go, I would have rather lived there than in Nome. It has trees, mountains, the people are wonderful, the hospital is amazing. It is a neat little town. But it is still a village so you have to pay attention to all the above-mentioned things. The bonus is that you can fly directly to Anchorage from there, you don't have to go through Nome. But you will have to settle for less things than you are used to having, or be willing to pay to get them shipped. Food is EXTREMELY expensive and so is cost-of-living in general. As for the difference in teaching part, it is just getting used to a different pace, a different way of life, and very different social situations. THings are much slower, in a nice way. The kids can come from some pretty broken homes, though, and there is still quite a bit of nuclear family type care. Sometimes kids are raised by grandparetns, uncles, aunts, friends. The best bet, really, is to see if you can afford to visit. I would really not recommend moving there without visiting first. It is a BIG change. I have some friends that lived in some of the villages and worked as teachers and now are in Nome. I could see if they mind me giving their Email.

Alaskan Mutt: It sounds like you at one time maybe lived there? I am curious as I have been invited to visit and just wanted heads up before I journey out there. Thanks....

Have not lived there. However have lived in places such as Bethel and Northway. Have been around or met many people that have been around the state.

Well, another thing on the plus side for Unalakleet, you will get a good front row seat for a portion of the Iditarod!!!

Mid to late 60's. My dad worked for the FAA. We lived at the airport.

That would be nice. I am just trying to get as much info about the place as I can. Thanks!
