We went back to TN for a visit recently after moving to Alaska a couple of years ago. My sister-in-law asked me if we had running water in our log cabin. My reply: "Yes! We have a toilet and everything!" I then invited her to visit and reassured her that while some people live off of the grid and have outhouses, we actually did have indoor plumbing and electricity. She didn't believe me........

My favorite is when people don't believe that Eskimos exist.
Makes me laugh every time.

A few years back when my husband and I were planning a visit to Alaska, my brother asked me what language they speak there and if we were going to need a book to translate the language.

I'll be arriving in AK in a few weeks and I'm getting my cat ready for the trip through Canada. I had to explain to my vet that Alaska IS part of the US and I DID NOT need an INTERNATIONAL health certificate to take them to Alaska.

When we started telling people we were moving to Alaska, a friend asked in all seriousness, "How do you drive to Alaska, is there a bridge or something?".

I am from Colorado and get a lot of silly questions as well. The most common question is ..... do you all get around on ski's and smoke pot?

Hell we do that here in Alaska! Not all. Back in the day there were pullouts on Alyeska Mountain just for that reason.

I haven't gotten that, but I do regularly hear this from some of my fellow Coloradans when they find out that I moved here from CA: "Isn't everyone a gay surfer out here?"

old post but still relevant! I worked in Skagway for a season, and we got the usual: Do you take American money, how high over sea level are we, besides a ton of stuff, like where do you get the rocks, etc. and a lot of tourist towns almost completely shut down for the winter. ... and yes, they acted like it was a Disney park, and then Disney started bringing in a cruise ship on Mondays ... there were people who wanted to make Alaskan money.
