Let;s save a lot of newcomers (cheechako) a lot of greif and just talk about the gear that works for us.
Tents...I'm partial to eureka
backpaks...I'm hooked on Kelty, external frame style, same for sleeping bags.
As far as headlamps go,
Princeton Tec beats Petzel all to heck and back.
Nothing says winter like a good pair of Bunny Boots.
Get the USA ones, there were some Korean ones years ago that didn't work well. White for everyday use, Black are more resistant to fuel like diesel and JP-4.

Presumably you are referring to camping gear. I use an old (I bought it in 1976) Mountainer external frame backpack. I don't know if they still exist anymore. I use a Eureka three-man tent for me and my dogs. Although, I have a very large (three separate rooms with internal walls) tent that will sleep 12 if necessary. I picked the large tent up from Cabellas in 1989.
In fact, most of my outdoor gear, like magnesium sticks, chaps (works great against Devils Club), hip-waders, sleeping bags, etc. comes from Cabellas.
