There is always openings in the canneries, they don't pay much, but the overtime is where you build the bucks up.

Flipp985 is on a distinguished road
I'm from Louisiana. I have a good amount of experience in seafood. I'm willing to learn any training necessary for processing, deckhand, dish washer, etc. Basically anything that will start me out with a descent paying rate and good experience to move up in a career field along the great Alaskan Fisheries. I don't get "sea sick." The smell of rotten or decaying fish doesn't bother me. I love the outdoors and cold climates. I can travel for seasonal jobs or months and months at a time. I would however be in need of some housing plans before arriving. Willing to work onshore and offshore. Willing to stay on boat or land. But prefers the sea. I eventually would like to make Alaska my home. If you can help assist me on a job opening or anything to help please email me at Flipp985@aol.com Thank You.

Um, the object isn't to catch "rotten or decaying fish", so that shouldn't be much of an issue if you are on a good boat or fish processing plant..

The only way you will get started on a boat there is...

1. You know one of the crew personally and he can vouch for you.

2. You are standing on the dock when a job opening comes up and can elbow past the other guys looking for the same job.

3. You buy your own boat and permit (or lease one) and go out yourself.

When we pull up to the dock, we get a steady stream of people wanting to know if we need deckhands, cooks and so forth. Funny part is we are mostly a dive boat, they don't know the differance between a work boat and fishing boat. You can toss them a line and ask to tie a square knot and most have no clue to what you are asking of them. Which means they are a liability on deck to the other crewmen if they can't secure something on deck, and it goes up from there.

The canneries are your best bet, and most can be found on line and have an application process for jobs that pay in the low range, but will also have hundreds of people filing for each one posted. The pay isn't good, but the hours are long and the OT helps make up for it. The bright side is that you are in the "Environment" and a lot closer to a boat job should one open up.

By all means, all it takes is a one way ticket and you'll be fine. Dutch Harbor, you'll get a job right away!

Yeah, the pointy end from the flat end.

Then you need to learn all the other words to sound salty... Port (not the wine), Starboard, deck, overhead, bulkhead, stern, keel, galley, bridge, helm, scupper and on and on, but the most important one to know.... directions to the Head....
