I wasn't trying to imply that Alaska should eradicate mosquitos just surprise that they survive the weather in Barrow. My understanding is that it is not often above freezing and when it is below 50 on a consistent basis in Florida our mosquitos take a hike or lay low somewhere! The rest of the year they are generally only aggressive at dawn and dusk so you plan accordingly. They do spray here but not nearly as aggressively as they did 20 years ago. I use cutter' s if I am in the woods and off products at home. What other fun critters do you have up there?

Some insects go into a stage where their development is literally suspended during periods of cold weather. It's called diapause, and is common in Alaskan insects.
I am in Barrow. DON'T DO IT!!! It's boring. Nothing to do here. No outdoor activities. No mountains. No trees. It's soggy-tundra. Trillions of Mosquitos. As for the hospital, permanent staff are fleeing. Worst place any of us have ever worked. In the last two years they've fired 11-12 docs, been through three administrators, three DONs, four Medical Directors. Housing is slum at best. The current DON & ADON are hated by the staff. Staff are looking to set both up to be fired. The hospital is currently facing lawsuits. The locals hate outsiders and aren't shy about telling you it daily. Me and four others are job hunting. We've decided not to give two weeks notice. We are already short-staffed from numerous recent quits. We have had it with mismanagement.
Did you not do any research at all before you went up there? The internet hadn't even been invented when I first went up there but I was able to go to the library and find some VHS tapes and pictures in Life magazine. Hopefully you'll put some effort into researching Nome or you're gonna be unhappy there too.
Took us almost 3 months to get our licenses and we had been licensed here before. They did change some things like getting fingerprints and making sure you had 30 ceu hrs.

I wonder who you are, naughtynurse, since you are someone I know. I won't speak to most of your points but I will say that the locals, and by locals you mean natives, didn't hate me. Maybe they sensed you hated them and returned the favor. I know a whole gaggle of staff up there that **** talk the natives and personally, I think if that's how you feel about the Inupiat, that you need to get the **** out of there or be gotten the **** out.
Geez, I had some natives verbally and physically attack me but I was a police officer there so it was expected. When they got into the racial stuff sometimes I just asked them things like "Your last name is Brower, what kind of Eskimo name is that??" With those guys that seemed to shut them up for a while. For the most part I never had that problem and I was in their homes trying to help them deal with their problems.
