I went out of state for my BS degree but I have taken classes at UAA. I would be getting my masters at UAA if they had the programs I wanted instead of UAF, so I am going to Purdue. Fairbanks is too cold and desolate.

Harrier would describe West Lafayette the same way.

There is a huge effort going on by UAA to HUGELY boost their engineering and science programs and eventually draw funding away from UAF. There is no reason for there to be ANY undergraduate studies at UAF and even 85% of the graduate classes can be done from UAA. Only very niche research needs to be conducted at UAF.

So with the shut down of the refinery becuase of the EPA and the slow death of UAF the only other thing supporting fairbanks is the base and there is strong talk of drawing down iselson. The base will never shut down but the only reason they need it is for the free air space to train pilots and maybe a first response wing but Russia is not our enemy anymore.

My guess is that in the next 10 years fairbanks will be nothing more than a small staging area for north slope support, a few niche grad classes/research and a hand full of air force personel for training ops.

Fairbanks has some of the coldest temperatures on recored in the world (other than antarctica), there is no reason for it to be any bigger than palmer. Very few people want to deal with -50F temperatures for significant periods during the winter.
When Harrier was considering which universities to which he would apply, UAF was on the list.

He didn't apply there, and chose a university close to home, but who knows, maybe Harrier will pursue a graduate program and move to Fairbanks.

Harrier is on a pre-teaching credential track in his major - if he does obtain a California teaching credential, he might end up in an Alaskan village as a teacher.

God be with you, I would strongly discourage you from doing that. I don't care what kind of bennifits they give you, you will never get the time back spent in Fairbanks or the villiage. Unless Fairbanks has so many white women they are throwing themselves at men, that would be the only redeeming quality if it were true. If that were true it would make Fairbanks better than sandiego but I have never heard of that happening, perhaps in some places in Russia that have a similar climate to Fairbanks.

Why the emphasis on white women?

His emphasis is always on woman period. Or lack there of in his life. That is one very lonely, desperate man.

Having lived in Fairbanks, Barrow, and a couple remote Inupiat villages I can tell you that I enjoyed my time in all of them.
