We can all read the news, but typically, if you're going to post just the parts of the news you want us to see, you might tell us why thought it important you bring it to our attention.

Got an opinion? ...or just seeing if you can poke something with a stick?

... Comeau said the ethnic diversity goes beyond language. Kids from different cultures learn differently and have different manners in the classroom ...
Art thou suggesting that home schooling is getting more and more appealing as a positive function of time?

And your point is, bustedknee?

Sorry, I don't get it. The title of your thread suggest that you think that the racial ratio might be a consideration of sorts....

I see lots of posts here by people wanting to come to Alaska. They ask many questions about raising kids here and how are the schools, etc. This kind of information is important to them.

Not everyone (esp. in the lower-48) reads the Anchorage paper. I found the article very interesting and felt others may as well. As a matter of fact, I feel today's paper had 2 interesting articles in contrast to the normal killings, crooked politicians, and state budget woes.

Per your request, I have an opinion: If you don't want to read a post, maybe you shouldn't. If you have nothing to contribute, go read the paper rather than entertaining yourself by criticizing other posts.

Hello? I was merely wondering what the point of your post was. Perhaps if you don't want comments regarding what you choose to post, you should refrain from posting in public forums.

Because certain of your posts here could rationally be construed as hatemongering...such as the so called "joke" you piped up with in the gay question about the Kenai...

well, your motives are just a bit suspect.

Why is that sort of information important to them?

Do tell.

I went back to school in 03, finished my degree. While there I met and interacted with quite a few "home schooled" youths. for the most part, they started off behind the others academically, and emotionally. they seemed to have problems relating to others their own age. Part of what the public school system does is enculturate students with their peers. No, not necessarily cookie cutter conformity, but rather, it allows them to learn how to get along with others, social norms. The home schooled, for the most part, did not know how to interact. Various behavioral problems, tolerated at home, were not socially tolerated in a University setting. As a general rule, here in N.C. home schooled is a pseudonym for behaviorally challenged. The other class of home schooled are those whose parents want to keep them out of school so they will not be introduced to "demon science", as they all agree, Darwin was a minion of the Devil.

Dusty where on earth do you get the idea homeschooling is a pseudonym for behaviorally challenged in NC?? I know a LOT of homeschoolers in NC, and most do it not because of behavioral problems, but rather because of NC's sub-par public education.

I do know some who homeschool for religious reasons, which I have no problem with- but really the bulk seem to just be disgusted with the questionable quality of ed. in NC outside of some more progressive districts in the Raleigh and Charlotte areas.

The adults I know who were homeschooled seem to mostly be well put together, successful people. They are able to think outside the box. I have known a few homeschool disaster stories but I also know several military academy graduates, a pilot, an RN and a really awesome bread-baking housewife who are all products of homeschool.

I love public schools, the concept of them, when they work! In many southeast states though, they are not working and a lot of parents are tired of that and are taking it into their own hands since the state governments have failed them so badly. Then you have situations like us, when we lived down south, where my child was bussed into an innercity middle school where there was violence and absolute disrespect for any authority including teachers. I went to a football game- 6th and 7th graders, and there was a shooting. Damned skippy we got our kid out of there and I homeschooled him. Sorry I'm not willing to sacrifice my kids to ensure complete interaction. Instead he just had to stick with the fiftyish kids in our homeschool co-op whose parents were equally fed up with the lousy public schools.

Here in Alaska many homeschool for another reason entirely- and that is necessity. Not everyone lives within reasonable commute of a public school and winter in particular breeds part-time homeschoolers. We are fortunate to live in town, and our town has a school. My kids love it and I enjoy working there.

I would never presume anything though about the people I know, even here, who opt to homeschool. It's a legitimate option that works well for MANY families in this country.
